justinv 4 1 Cars Posted April 13, 2006 hi, Thinking of replacing my 1.9 8v gti engine off my 309 and replacing it with an mi, is this directly swappable? and are all harnesses the same as the standard gti ?
Jonmurgie 2 Posted April 13, 2006 Engine fits right in and there is a little bit of wiring to sort... try a search and you will find stacks of information on how to do it etc.
d-9 0 Posted April 14, 2006 If you are using the engine from a 405 the exhaust manifold will hit the bulkhead, so you will need to reangle the standard mani or use a 309 GTI16 manifold, theres lots of information on this. A wiring loom from a 309gti16 would probably plug and play, but I cant say for sure, never got my hands on one! Eitherway its a very simple swap and totally worth it. vee6 0 Posted April 16, 2006 you cant use the gti-16 exh manifold as it fouls the brake servo .. shame thou cos it is a work of art !! You will have ot make it a LHD for it to fit
Jonmurgie 2 Posted April 16, 2006 I think you can use the GTi16 manifold in a 309 though...
vee6 0 Posted April 16, 2006 apparently not .. it was on my list of things to do .. even had a bid on one on french ebay but was reliably informed it wouldnt happen. http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?Vie...bayphotohosting I'd love to hear a difinitive answer on it. Dont personally know of anyone who has fitted one ..? i'm sure if it did fit then peple would have got hold of one rather than suffer either oil surge or smacking the crap outta there bulkhead( granted its the cheaper option .. hammer £3.99 from homebase rather than £500 from peugeot !!) Jonmurgie 2 Posted April 16, 2006 Oil Surge?! What are you on about... I assume you are meaning that you only have the choice of re-angling the engine or bashing the bulkhead?! Well there are other far better options... a search will tell you that I think the GTi16 Manifold would fit if you run a pedal box setup...
d-9 0 Posted April 16, 2006 The manifold wont fit on a RHD 309 becuase it hits the master cylinder, you will need to go to a pedal box like in andy kirks old rally car. However the guy who asks the original question is apparently from malta so theres no reason why he couldnt use it. Manifold is a real work of art, had a good look at one in the metal once, best description is "a really horny bunch of bananas". Bashing the bulkhead is a REALLY bad idea, I did it on my old 309 and caused the bulkhead to crumple really badly and the seam split wide open in the accident, you should either use the manifold angling wedge/get the standard manifold reangled or get a 4 branch. However this doesnt solve the oil surge problem, as it seems to be a characteristic of the engine.
justinv 4 1 Cars Posted April 20, 2006 ok thanks for all that info, so...... all i would really like to know is if i am lucky enough to get my hands on mi, the engine fits with no harm to the original mounting points and what so ever, the harness of an mi seems to go ok with the factory loom, the biggest problem seems to be the exhaust manifold right ? would the standard one off my 1.9 gti fit ? Very much confused on how to make my 309 as good as my friends most beloved 205 gti, she's a BEAST... no one can just hadle ! regards
d-9 0 Posted April 20, 2006 If you get the mi16 from a 309 GTI16 then everything will fit (I think, i havent tried it). If you get an mi16 from a 405 or BX then you will have to do the exact same conversion that all of us have, so you will have the same wiring issues (the 405/bx looms do not plug straight in) and the exhaust will hitthe bulkhead. The 8v manifold does not fit the 16v head, but there is plenty of information on here about how to wire them up and modify the mi16 exhaust manifold.
justinv 4 1 Cars Posted April 21, 2006 ok thanks mate you seem to be well informed on the not so famous 309's..... and i think i will be bothering you more on more info. thanks for now
justinv 4 1 Cars Posted April 21, 2006 another question what is the difference between a 309 gti16 and a 309 mi16 ? is it the same or am i mistaken? cause all this 16 stuff and getting confused and need to make up my mind whether getting an mi or just upgrading my old 1.9 8v lump
hexhamstu 9 Posted April 24, 2006 a 309gti16 is a 309 that was fitted with the mi16 engine from standard by peugeot. a 309 mi16 is one that has been converted from a gti 8v to an mi16 engine, the engine can come from either a 405 mi16 or a citreon bx gti 16v.
