Alan_M 66 1 Cars Posted April 12, 2006 Unless you've been lucky enough to find a refurbed Mi16 lump, then account for a rebuild
PsychoSimon 0 Posted April 12, 2006 If you have found the same as me when you searched for the conversion, you will have about 200 threads all with the answer "if you do a search you will find out" lol. Basically there are the two Mi donor looms. one from the 405 ( you need to make a link loom to which you will find info through the searches) and the one from the BX gti (which is what i have in mine) This is only a case of connecting a fixed live, a switche dlive, fuel pump wire, rev counter and a couple of earths. On both looms you have to retain the original sensor loom from the 205 (temp guage etc). You can use the original 8v loom and ecu to run it but you have two main problems: 1. you will still have the rough running which is characteristic of the 8valvers, 2. the rev limiter will kick in way before the mi16 runs out of steam, nearly eliminating the point of the conversion. As for mounting the engine in the car, it fits on all the standard mounting points providing you use the mi16 top aluminium moutn as the 8v one will not fit the block. You need to trim some off the radiator cowling to allow space for the inlet manifold, or alternatively you could buy a shortened inlet manifold (albeit at the expense of a bit of tourque due to the shorter inlet tracts). The bulkhead needs addressing so that the exhaust will go on too. You can do a few things to combat this. you can buy a re-angled exhaust manifold, you could buy a manifold spacer plate (you can get them off someone on here IIRC) which angles thw whole thing, you can (which is what i have done) cut the bulkhead away where it is close to the exhaust manifold and weld in a new section further away from the downpipe and manifold. The standard gti downpipe fits the mi16 exhaust manifold no problems. Some people have found that they need to shorten the downpipe slightly to get it to fit but mine went straight on. You can use any BE gearbox but for all round performance the general concensus in to use the mi16 box, for track us the 1.6gti box and for motorway cruising use the 1.9 gti box. You can also build custom gearboxes with certain ratios from each box if you want to. Gear linkages and drive shafts remain to be the standard gti items although you will need a different throttle cable to reach the throttle body properly (i used a universal 405 one for mine and it works a treat) Hope this sheds some light on it for you mate. I did my conversion myself and would say its not more difficult than a normal engine swap, no real nasties to look for its al pretty straightforward. if you have any questions the people here are very good and know their stuff.
