number2301 1 1 Cars Posted April 12, 2006 The cars being a right nightmare, not to handy when I've got a 60 mile drive tomorrow! So here goes, oil pressure is really low, its stalling more often than normal when I come off the accelerator, its generally running s*ite and just to add to it all 1st and 2nd are stupidly stiff. A bit of background, its leaking oil from multiple places, sump pan and head gasket amongst them and I recently over filled it with oil so it was sat around for a week while I got a sump plug socket. It runs poorly and kangaroos quite a bit sometimes, other times its better, runs on 3 cylinders when its cold but is much better when its warmed up. Oh and I park it in reverse all the time so it spends days at a time in reverse, could that affect the clutch cable? As for the gears, I know the clutch cable needs adjusting so could this just be that getting worse? If so how do I sort it bearing in mind I'm mechanically retarded so will need nice simple instructions My main worry is the oil pressure dropping and the worse running than normal, could it be from being sat for a week? Anyone got an idea?
Alex G 0 Posted April 12, 2006 clutch pedal is easy to adjust. loosen the lock nut on the end of the clutch cable and then turn the other one, in if its biting too low or out if too high for your running problems have a look at your dizzy cap and arm if the red light isnt on then the oil pressure isnt too low, and if you have the correct amount of oil, good filter then there isnt much you can to to change it (except change viscosity or rebuild your engine)
number2301 1 1 Cars Posted April 12, 2006 Cheers I'll check the dizzy later on, is the oil filter the same on a PAS car where its remote as on a non pas car where its on the front of the block?
number2301 1 1 Cars Posted April 12, 2006 Any more detailed instructions on how to do the clutch cable? Like where it is, what it looks like? I wasn't joking when I said I was mechanically retarded
Banjo 1 Posted April 12, 2006 Clutch cable is under battery tray. Why do you leave it in reverse all the time? Ben
number2301 1 1 Cars Posted April 12, 2006 Cause its sits there for ages so I don't want the brakes to bind!
jonah 1 Posted April 13, 2006 Leaving it in reverse won't harm the clutch cable. Oil pressure could just be bad electrics... e.g. corrosion in the brown multiplug in the engine loom (the signal from the pressure sender goes through there). Can you give us more detail about what the pressure reading does at different engine speeds / temperatures?
Guest BrainFluid Posted April 13, 2006 It it sits for ages why not chock the wheels rather than risk it getting stuck in reverse one day? Nate.
Banjo 1 Posted April 14, 2006 Leaving it in reverse is no different to leaving in first, the engines still gota turn over for the car to move.. Ben
vee6 0 Posted April 16, 2006 how many miles on the clock ?
number2301 1 1 Cars Posted April 17, 2006 120k+ miles, oil pressure sits a bit below the middle mark under revs then drops down towards the red (but never into it) as the revs drop sitting just above the red mark at about 700rpm at which point it tends to stall! Don't think there's much if any difference between temperatures. I've recently been told the oil breather pipes need replacing at some point, which will be causing the low oil pressure, anyone know how much they are/if they're still being produced? jonah 1 Posted April 18, 2006 No, the breather pipes will not affect oil pressure. Although if they're split then they may be letting unmetered air into the intake system which could explain the poor running and tendency to stall. If the pressure gauge never goes above half way then I would still suspect the electrics. Would have thought that if it was worn bearings then the pressure would continue to increase with revs, and would be noticeably higher with the engine cold. Guest BrainFluid Posted April 20, 2006 Still think its better to chock a car than leave it in any gear if its going to be sat around for a while... Nate.
jonD6B 0 Posted April 20, 2006 Shouldn't your revs. be higher than 700rpm at tickover? Which engine is it?
