Running Probs...jerky?

Recommended Posts

Guest chris1993GTI

Hi All,

Got a slight running problem with my 1.9. It starts first touch of the key and I have no issues really on the idle side of things. Idles at 900-1000 RPM. It just seems very jerky at low revs. If you rev it, as the revs come back down it almost feels as if it has cut out, drops to approx 500 RPM and then builds back up instantly to 1000 RPM. The problem is, that if I'm in traffic, the load put on the engine when I raise the clutch, drops the idle....It thens revs itself up to stop itself from stalling. Seems quite violent though :P It causes the car to lurch forward! Any ideas where to start???

Cheers,

Chris. :D

I would try a new set of plugs first, even if they look OK. failing that move on to the dizzy cap and rotor arm, then the HT leads and ignition coil. Seems like all GTI's go through this in my experience.

Mine has done it on many occasions it has alwas been related to the ignition side of things. last time it was due to a dodgy spark plug on 1 cylinder and the time b4 that was because a contact inside the dizzy cap had corroded.

Cheers mate :P I will check that lot tomorrow! I have just done a search for variouse discriptions of my fault, and the TPS has been mentioned a couple of times. Any ideas if adjusting the TPS helps?

Chris.

dont think the tps would cause that (could be wrong thou :P) - i would try giving it good service to start with if it hasnt had one for a while? plugs, leads, dizzy cap, arm, also clean the breathers/tb with some carb cleaner - gives it a new lease of life :P

also worth borrowing a different afm if the problem persists? is it just from cold or hot or all the time? :D

I agree, even if you run the car with the tps unplugged, it does not alter the idle speed - it just tells the ECU the position of the throttle plate at idle and inject less fuel when it's closed.

Seems to be all the time. Makes no differance if it's hot or cold. It also seems to smeel as if it's running rich. Do these have a temp sensor for the ECU?

Yes. just below the distributor. It has a blue plug connected to it. These can often go, but personally I have never had any prolems with them. What sort of mileage are you getting to a tank?

I got from London to Donny on 3/4 tank. About 240 miles. I'm not running it all the time as a daily drive as I keep taking bits off it. I'll give it a good service and tune. Just seems really strange. Runs mint all other times:)

Sounds about right to me - 240 is roughly what I get with most of that being b road driving and a bit of town driving thrown in.
