Hi

I own a std '89 1.6 GTI, with an healthy B6D engine and BE3 gearbox.

I bought recently another 1.6GTI for spares, which came with a 105bhp engine.

I was considering using its head, by doing some work in it, skim a bit, bigger valves, hotter cam, to fit it to my engine...

You suggest any other options, considering I'm keeping the std L-jetronic?

Regards

Alexandre

Forget about the XU5J head, it is not nearly as good as the XU5JA/XU9JA head.

Try searching I have described what I did to get 125Bhp /148Nm out of mine.

As Pete says... Might as well just start with the later GTI head, although, if you are going for oversize valves then I guess it doesn't matter which head you start from.

Other than that, just do a search for any of the 8v head modification threads and you will get lots of answers with regards to induction, cams, management etc etc...

Good luck!

Thanks for the tips, guys...

I'll dismantle the head anyway, because I'm suspecting that it has the XU5J block with the later head.

The car was runing with the same ECU part number as mine... and they are supposed to be different!

I'll measure the valve sizes and the cam lift and see if it is an later spec head or not. I think these are the only main diferences...

Chambers are different as well, the exhuats ports have EGR-like holes in them.

I have some images of them on my computer, I'll dig them out for you if you like?

That would be nice....

I should be looking for 11,5mm of cam height, and 41,5mm of inlet valve size, for a late head spec, right?!

XU5J exhaust ports - note the EGR like channels..

And the same on an XU9JA / XU5JA, note how the holes are blocked and there are not "bump" in the ports
