Guest woll Posted April 10, 2006 Hey, I've got a fairly old sony HU and have just hooked up a crappy amp/sub in the boot... It works fine though I can't get the amp to switch off when the stereos off. It means I have to disconnect the battery every time or take the fuse out. I know most new HU's have an amp lead to switch it off but don't think mine has. Does anyone know how to do it without having that lead? Let me know if you need more info on this. I did think about putting a switch on the power cable... Thanks
Paintguy 0 Posted April 10, 2006 How many power connections does the amp have? As you say, most have a +ve, -ve, and then a switched/remote feed from the HU to power it up or down. The recognised standard is a blue and white wire from your HU. Does your amp have a terminal for such a connection? It's generally near the main two, but smaller. Thanks for your quick reply The amp has +ve, -ve and a remote connection in between the two. My HU doesn't have that blue/white wire unfortunately. Is there a way round this? Paintguy 0 Posted April 10, 2006 You could feed the remote input with a switched (ignition or accessory) live. That'd mean it would switch itself off when you take out the key
Guest woll Posted April 10, 2006 (edited) You could feed the remote input with a switched (ignition or accessory) live. That'd mean it would switch itself off when you take out the key Thanks paintguy, would that mean i just run a cable from the remote connector to the ignition live? Where do I find that? Fuesbox? Sorry bit useless with the electrics!! Still haven't managed to figure out my immobiliser that I've bought!! Edited April 10, 2006 by woll
Paintguy 0 Posted April 10, 2006 When you've got a few hours to spare, bcae is a good place to start to learn about car electrics It would make sense to use the switched feed that powers up your stereo. If you've wired the HU up yourself, you should know which one this is, normally refered to as accessory or ignition +ve in the Stereos wiring diagram. Tap in to this wire, and run it back to your amps remote feed. Use a small fuse near the HU end to protect it in case the wire running to the amplifier shorts out on anything. The current on these wires is usually pretty small, so a 3 amp fuse will be plenty.

Do you know what the normal colour is for the ignition +ve wire? And whats the best way of fitting a fuse? Do you just buy a cable from a car audio store? Thanks again
Guest smokinslim Posted April 12, 2006 Like Paintguy says, if you've fitted tha HU you should be able to find the relevant wires without too much trouble. If you find you HU has only a permanent live feed, should have a switched live from ignition but can be wired up without, then see if it has an output for a powered ariel. This will do the same job as a remote amp output. You can effectively take the feed from anywhere, hardly any power is required by the remote, it's really just a signal to tell the amp whether it should be switched on or not. One advantage of taking an switched feed, i.e. only on when the ignition is on, is that when the ignition's off your amp wont be draining the battery. It's quite plausible to fit a switch in the remote lead, and handy too. You can kill your subs whenever you see plob etc without killing your tunes. Fitting a switch in the amps main power is a very bad idea though, as soon as a decent amount of power flows through it the switch will melt and probably catch fire. gti-hysteria 0 Posted April 13, 2006 iv got a toggel switch on my power cable to turn mine off as i also have a power cap and i found that if i dont turn it off the power cap drains my battery, dunno if thats ment to do it but it did. but my toggel switch seemd 2 do the trick, hasnt melted yet either.
