Be1 Pinion Into A Be3 Box? Will It Go?

Recommended Posts

littlemike

Hi. I've just bought two gearboxes to make up one.

The first box is a be1 1.9 box that's fitted with an mi16 final drive. It has 62/14 crownwheel + pinions. It also has a Quaife diff.

I need a be3 box for my 205 though so the second box I bought was an mi16 be3 box.

Having taken the standard diff out of the be3 mi16 box to fit the quaife I found out the crownwheel + pinions have 65/16 teeth! It's not an mi16 box then is it?!!

It has 405 linkages though so I'm assuming that it's a 405 sri box?

Now can I fit the be1 cw+pinion into the be3 box? I'm thinking not, but I don't know!

If not then neither box is any good to me + I'll have to fit the quaife into my existing box that I'm using + sell the 1.9 be1 box with the mi final drive still fitted, but with a standard diff. Arggggh :blush:

All BE1 and BE3 CWP's are the same, As said the 16x65 is the SRi box

Thanks Miles.

So I can swap the output shaft from the be1 box into the sri box, but keep the sri gears? Or does the pinion come off the end of the shaft?

Result. :D

Knowing that I could swap the cw+p betwwen the two boxes as Miles said I stripped the be3 box down tonight (I stripped the be1 box last night).

I pulled the two shafts out + thought while I was at it I'd count the number of teeth on each gear & compare it to the be1 box. To my surprise every gear had the same amount of teeth!

1st= 38/13

2nd= 37.20

3rd= 34/25

4th= 31/29

5th= 32/37

Which by my calculations means the ratios are:

1st= 2.923

2nd= 1.85

3rd= 1.36

4th= 1.0689

5th= 0.8648 (~0.865)

So the gearbox that I bought as an Mi16 box that has a 16/65 tooth cw+pinion is actually a 1.9gti box that's been fitted with a 1.6gti final drive! :D

The only trouble now is that I've got to put it all back together!

Don't the selectors take some getting back in correctly!? :wub: I think they're in right now although the 5th gear selector can fallover/out when you select certain gears (without the other half of the casing in place)!

I need some sealer now & I think I'm going to get a new oil seal that goes on the input shaft as due to the amount of times I had the shaft in & out whilst trying to get the selectors correct I've probably worn it out! :)

Don;t forget to make sure the input shaft is shimmed up correctly, got you on that one!!

I hadn't noticed any shims? I didn't actually take the input shaft apart all I did was remove it from the box and then put it back in place as all of the gears are what I need. Where abouts are the shims Miles and do I need to bother as I haven't actually changed anything?

Thanks.

I'm about to embark on swapping the 8v 1.9 gears onto the MI16 CWP - can you tell me Miles or anyone else how you shim up the input shaft? I take it there is an endfloat measurement to prevent backlash? Is there any other pointers I should watch out for? A mate of mine had his Golf box "rebuilt" for £600 and it sounds bloody awful - I wonder if this is a clearance issue.
