Engine Mount

I've spent most of the day prepping the motor for the coming season's track based lunacy, but have hit upon a snag ... already ...

 

Whilst renewing the gearbox->bulkhead engine mount, I've snapped off one of the two locating studs ... together with the battery clamp bolt ...

 

I've sorted the battery clamp, but I haven't had a go at drilling out the engine mount one yet

 

Question is - is it vital it's done? As far as I can see, they're only there to locate the mount and stop it revolving - ?? I presume the mount won't be pushed up, as it's being pulled down :blush: by the weight of the engine - so the only potential movement is from side to side - which it shouldn't do as the other nut's tight and there's a bit of the snapped stud protruding into the hole on the mount base anyway - ?

 

Or is this horrendously dodgey?!

 

 

The mount is bolted to the battery tray panel, which looks as though it'll come off - there are four big-ish bolts (two of which are impossible to get at) and two smaller ones. Does this panel come off if these are all removed?

It is possible to change the battery tray yes, i wouldn't say its vital but if it were my car then i would change the tray...

Just replace the battery tray - not really that difficult or time consuming, so why take the risk? It would probably be fine with one of two studs missing though...

I wouldn't worry too much about it. Most of the force is taken by the mount body anyway and there really shouldn't be that much movement. Just take it easy for a few miles as it will be obvious if there is a large abount of knocking.

The way I see this mount working is that it NEEDS these 2 nuts and bolts fitted otherwise the engine/gearbox will just bounce about on the battery tray. Running with just one will probably strain the other so that it risks snapping. Personally I've always thought that the 2 13mm nuts don't look strong enough to start with. The big bolt and nut in the centre merely bolts the mount to the gearbox.

thanks for the confirmation - i can see how the arrangement works now

 

i'll have to look into sourcing a new battery tray - is it a common 205 panel, or peculiar to the GTi?

 

 

another job on the list :P
