Valve Stem Clearances In Inches

Recommended Posts

I'm trying to decide whether my valve guides need replacing so I have measured the clearances between the valve stems and the guide at the cylinder side of the exhaust valves (I guessed this is where most wear is likely to occur).

I got (this might be rubbish as I was never taught how to use imperial guages :D )

Valve stem - 274 thou

Valve guide - 276 thou giving 2 thou clearance.

Now this seems pretty tight (I've seen 3 thou as normal for exhaust valves on an American website), though when you fit the valve into the guide a try to wobble it side to side you can a tiny bit.

So, my question is, do those measurements look anything like correct and is a tiny amount of side to side wobble on a valve acceptable? I haven't measured the inlets yet but these seem a little tighter than the exhaust side.

Cheers

Dean

On an 8mm stem in bronze guides 1 thou is enough for inlet valves and 1.5 to 2 thou for exhaust valves so yours are fine.
