Grim.Badger 15 Posted April 8, 2006 Just got a 1.9GTi . When I bought it the previous owner said something along the lines of "Yeah just fill it with unleaded and you'll be fine" (I used to own a diesel and this new fangled petrol thing is full of booby traps for an idiot like me ). Being a bloke I've only just read the manual, and checked this forum. Damn, sometimes I wish I wasn't a know it all smug git. I had to get the cambelt done in the first week when the tensioner bearing collapsed so it's been timed up with 95ron in it. It seemed to run fine on it and I clocked up about 3k miles in it before realising I'd been using the wrong fuel all this time. Have I shafted the engine? Should I stick to 97ron from now on or does it need 95ron now that it's been timed to take it? I'm paranoid that either way I'll trash the engine
Ryan 99 Posted April 8, 2006 If it's been set to run on 95 then you can put either 95 or 97 in it. It's only putting in a LOWER grade that causes problems. e.g if it was set for 97, then 95 would be no good. You won't get any benifit to running on higher octane fuel though, unless you adjust the timing to suit.
Jonmurgie 2 Posted April 8, 2006 You won't have shafted the engine, though it may feel odd on the wrong octane (if it's lower than the timing is set). Best thing I'd recommend is to put super unleaded or optimax in and get it setup on a rolling road where they can have the car under load and swing the dizzy to get the right timing. I had this done on my 205 when I first got it (1.9 8v back then) and it gained 12bhp doing that, I could actually SEE the gains as they swung the dizzy! Money well spent that is
