Ryan 99 Posted April 7, 2006 I need to order some new speedo gears for when I fit my mi16 gearbox. I'll be using the unmodified mi16 box with 1.9 alloys, so I assume I need 1.9 gears for the speedo to be accurate. The dealer didn't know which sizes I need. There was a choice of 19 or 22 teeth for the large gear, and 17, 18, 19, 20,or 21 teeth for the smaller gear on the end of the speedo cable. My current gearbox is a 1.6 so I can't look at that to check.
pug_ham 245 3 Cars Posted April 7, 2006 Why do you need the new speedo gears? I think the ones fitted to the Mi box now will give you the correct speedo readings already. Graham.
Ryan 99 Posted April 7, 2006 The gearbox came from a BX, which had different sized wheels to the 205, so I imagine the speedo would be slightly off if I kept the original drive gears?
pug_ham 245 3 Cars Posted April 7, 2006 What size tyres? There is a wheel / tyre size comparison on the web that should be able to tell you the difference. I don't think anyone else changes the speedo drives with the gearbox from a BX. Graham.
littlemike 0 Posted April 7, 2006 I had to change mine when I fitted my mi16 gearbox to the 205 as the mi's gear (the one on the end of the speedo cable) over read by miles! Once swapped back to the one out of the 205 box it was fine again. I can't remember how many teeth they had (it might have been 17v 19), but the mi gear had 2 more teeth than the 205 one. There's a thread strted by Kate205 who had this problem recently, but I don't know if she solved it in the end?
