405 1.6 Glx Gearbox Any Good For A 205mi

Recommended Posts

Guest Doot

Hi, I`m still in the thinking stages of an Mi conversion. Wife doing most of the thinking. Anyway I have a 405 1.6i GLX sitting here and wondered if the gearbox would be good for an Mi conversion. I have no idea of the ratio`s but from what I remember 3500 Rpm was about 80. If it would be a good box I`ll remove it and get rid of the car (Loads missing, 1.6 engine if anyone wants one?).

Have done a search but all I can find is 205 1.6 boxes and I thought that the 405 box would have different ratio`s on it. but would it be good box if anyone knows let me know.

Thanks Will

I doubt it will be ideal, though not knowing the ratios it's hard to tell... ideally the Mi box would be what you want, though it may be similar to the Mi in spec, who knows!!

According to the 405 Haynes the ratio's for the 405 1.6 are;

Be1 gearbox;
  • 1st; 3.25:1

    2nd; 1.85:1

    3rd; 1.28:1

    4th; 0.97:1

    5th; 0.757:1

    Final drive 4.187:1

differences for Be3 gearbox are
  • 1st; 3.45:1

    final drive; 4.06:1

This would make the gearbox to long for the Mi imo, I have one fitted to my 1.9 8v & its getting changed soon for this reason. Nice for cruising but not on track.:angry:

I didn`t know if they would be similar ratio`s to a 205 1.6 box as the engine doesn`t have as much power in it.

I couldn`t find any info on ratio`s or speeds anywhere. Guess I won`t have the grief of fitting it.

Thanks for info Will

I don't think it's much of an issue. It will still get off the mark ok as the overall 1st is shorter:

ie

3.25 x 4.187 = 13.6 versus 2.92 x 4.43 = 12.9

The diff ratio is only 5% longer. The rest of the gears are identical to the Mi16. If it's your only choice, put it in. It's certainly better than using a 1.9 GTi box!

ie 5th gear

1.9 GTi 0.866 x 3.62 = 3.13

1.6 405 0.76 x 4.187 = 3.18

Mi16 0.76 x 4.43 = 3.36

Also, the Mi16 had a 195/55/15 tyre, whilst 205's have 185/55/15 (or 195/50/15). That's a 3% difference. So overall, there would only be a 2% difference (other than 1st).

These are the speeds I got with the online calculator on www.205gti.com with the ratio`s provided from pugtorque.

All speeds at 6500Rpm, 195.55.15 tyres Be3 box from a 1.6i 405

1st 32.3Mph

2nd 60.3

3rd 87.2

4th 115.0

5th 147.4

I don`t know what speeds other people get with their 1.6,1.9 gti and Mi16 box`s or if the gearbox calculator is accurate.

If the 1.6i 405 gearbox is the same ratios as the 1.6 carb 405 gearbox I can tell you it will be too long. I had one. 5th was long - only 3000 rpm at 70 mph. Torque peaked at 2600 rpm though so it wasn't too bad. I know it's neither here nor there but they must have filled the injection 1.6 405 was concrete slabs - it was 2 seconds slower to 60 than the carb.
