SPGTi 2 Posted April 6, 2006 I will be swapping gearboxes this weekend and just wondered if anyone had any tips or tricks that would make life easier esp. as I will probabaly be attempting this on my own. pug_ham 244 3 Cars Posted April 6, 2006 Just made as quick scan through jon's article on the main site & the only things I do that I didn't see mentioned are remove the lower engine mount fork to give a little more movement (support engine under sump) & I take the gearbox stud out so it doesn't need dropping as far to clear the inner wing / chassis leg. I've done a gearbox remove refit four or five times now & don't find them a problem anymore like I did originally. Graham. Share this post Link to post Share on other sites

Dixon 1 Posted April 7, 2006 Did this at the weekend and all I can say is see if you can try and get someone to give you a quick hand when you're lifting the new box into position as its a bit of a struggle. As you're lifting it into place the second person can quickly bung one or two of the bolts in when its close to take to load of you. Share this post Link to post Share on other sites

I'm bloody good at this now, as my box has been off four times in just over four months... The first time it nearly killed me, but it is getting quicker and easier - last week it only took about 90 mins to remove it and then put it back together... Jer309GTi 3 Posted April 7, 2006 The way I do it if its just me on my own is put the gearbox on a jack, and get to it the right height to fit to the engine. You only need to get it on the splines then, rather than lift it and try and get it on the splines. Share this post Link to post Share on other sites
