Bike Carbs On Standard Head / Cam

Recommended Posts

Getting a manifold made up to put them on my 1.9, I understand they work better with a wilder cam but was wondering how much better and if that means the car will lose a lot of power low down,

Hmm, I guess what I'm trying to say is how much will I gain with a new cam compared with the cost/ hassle of getting and fitting one. (I don't really want to spend anything I don't have to)

:(

thanks,

dave.

Carbs or throttlebodies allow you to use more crazy cams if you desire - cams that wouldn't work very well on the standard inlet plenum (and air flow meter on these cars.)

You won't lose anything over the existing setup though, you'll always gain no matter what cams your using.

Ah okey, that's good to know I'll stick with standard for the mo then, I'm hoping to have them on there and running for under £300. :(

As a bolt on modifications, as Ahl says, they will give you more power and allow you to modify the head further at a later date... However, if you are competant enough to do this, I reckon it has to be worth whipping the head off and getting a skim and 3 angle seats, then putting it back together yourself... In reality, that won't cost you money and it will give you a few more ponies to go with your new set-up! Really, what does a skim cost, £30-£40 and seats can't be a lot more, maybe £100 all in... Sweet!

Keep us updated with the project as you go along and lots of photos of the install as I reckon there are a fair few people looking at this conversion as a cheaper route to power!

Dont forget about the cost of cambelt, headbolts, gasket etc if you pull the head off, its usually £100 or so all in just to take the head off and put it back on.

Good point Doug - That is easy to forget... Then again, if you are going to the trouble of upgrading the engine, and it's going to be putting out more power, I reckon some insurance against failure by putting in a new HG, cambelt etc is probably worthwhile, so money well spent!
