Starting Problems

Recommended Posts

DaveK

recently ive been having alot o probs gettin the 205 starting first time. i replaced the starter motor about 6 months ago and worked spot on for about 4 months.

now it sticks half the time and i need to stick it in gear, rock the car and then it will start.

what else could be the problem? i really dont think its the starter as its nearly brand new

im gonna check the wiring soon but seems a random problem for wiring

cheers

dave

Could be the ring gear on the flywheel preventing the starter engaging? Come across this on Triumphs but never a Pug.

hmm, sounds like the solenoid is stuck, this deos happen even with new starters. I had to put my car in gear and rock it backwards and forwards because this then moves the ring gear and starter solenoid. after that it would allways work. failing that, wack the starter with a hammer while trying to turn the car over, it just tries to unstick the solenoid.

Agreed that it can only really be the Starter knackered again if it's sticking and worked fine for 4 months... is it covered under any warranty?

my money is on the wiring, 205 gti starter wiring simply isnt up to the job after 10+ years. when you put it in gera and rock it you could easily be moving the wiring about, next time it doesnt start open the bonnet and reseat the brown multiplug and the connector to the solenoid.

Or use a wire direct from the battery to the solenoid, if you don't have PAS then it is fairly easy to get your arm in there.
