Guest Chrissy_t

As above hat is the widest tyre i could fit to a 205 1.9 gti rim? believe they are 6j?

currently have 185 55 15 is it poss to go 195?

and anyone know what slick tyre size i could fit and how the numbering works!

Cheers!

It's very common for people to use 195/50/15's on the 1.9 rim as the size is considerably cheaper than 185/55... I think 205/50 would start causing issues with rubbing, especially if you have a lowered car

Oh, and welcome to the forum :D

in addition to jon's reply.

full slick tyres have 180/580-15 or 19/57-15 type of numbering.

the first number means width (180mm or 19cm in the examples)

while the second one means the overall tyre radius (2r) of the tyre

(580mm or 57cm) and the last one says the wheel size they're for

(in the usual way - inches).

as you know, on normal tyres the second number means the tyre

height in percentage of the width (55% of 185mm or 50% of 195mm).

hope this helps.

It's not about the widest, but which is the best tyre on a 6" rim. If you go too baggy, you get side wall flex which destroys the responsiveness. The 195/55/15 is fine in a semi-slick, but not 205/50/15.

I have 195/50/15 on mine with no rubbing. Theres not much space betwee the sidewall and the wheelarch at the back though. I have no experience of the narrower tyre but I would'nt say the steering is especailly heavy.

thank you very muchly!

cheers cybernck very helpful, are part worn slicks a good purchase?where is the best and cheapest place to get them?

i will go for a 195 50 15 as they are a bit wider and seem to be a little cheaper as everyone has said.

Cheers!!

Ive got a full set of Yoko A048's like Jonmurgie, which are 195-50-15 (can't comment on how wide his are), but they are fine. And grip good. If you go full slick route.. this could throw up loads of other issues in the handling dept. Which have been covered extensively on this forum. Also if you go down the semi-slick route like i have, you can still use them on the road.

Best of luck with choice.. and as the others have siad here.. dont go any wider than 195 on the stock 1.9 rims.. else the sidewall flex reduces any gain in grip you may get.. and the car then feels 'soggy' in the corners. Some of you will know what i mean. (not tried on the 205 rim.. on another car)
