mikie 0 Posted April 4, 2006 I have Just got a be3 (reverse behind 5th) gearbox from a bx 16v bur one of the selector arms looks to be very bent compared to the 1.6 box in the car at the moment. Its the arm made of flat plate. Is this right or has it been bent by some ham fisted monkey when removing it from the car.If it is bent and not supposed to be then is it easy enough to remove the armn from the 1.6 box and fit it to the new one.Heres a pic of what it looks like is this correct
Banjo 1 Posted April 4, 2006 (edited) Thats not bent its how they are, just knock the roll pin out and swop for a 205 one, make sure the shaft doesn't drop down when you take the pin out tho! Or you can cut the middle out and press it flat, then weld back together at the right length. Edited April 4, 2006 by Banjo
pug_ham 244 3 Cars Posted April 4, 2006 Thats how they are on the BX & 405, like banjo said swap the one from teh 205box across (or make a visit to the scrapyard so you have a spare box & gain one ). They are a double rollpin that holds them on & when I swapped mine I put it in gear. Once you've done the swap make sure you can still select all six geasr before you start to fit it by moving the selector arms as needed. Graham.

pug_ham 244 3 Cars Posted April 7, 2006 so by putting it in gear first does that stop things from falling into the casing? It worked when I did it but Miles said it can still happen so its not a sure fire way of stopping it. Main thing is however you choose to do it be sure to check you can select all gears by moving the selector arms before you fit it to the car just in case they have dropped. Graham. Powers 13 Posted April 7, 2006 If it does drop is there a way of fixing it?
pug_ham 244 3 Cars Posted April 7, 2006 Partial strip of the gearbox at least afaik, Miles has posted how to fix it before though iirc. Graahm.
Powers 13 Posted April 7, 2006 Couldnt find any more info!!
Miles 331 1 Cars Posted April 7, 2006 Here it goes 3 ways of doing it 1. Luck and it not dropping down 2. Drill a small hole in the end of the shaft and hold up with a self tapper etc 3. If the above fails and it drops down, You need to remove the Diff cover, Speedo housing and the Diff, Stick your finger in the pinion shaft hole and push the fork back up thru the hole
huxley309 0 Posted April 8, 2006 Also if you can try to use split pin centre punches, i was lucky in that the two i bought were the same sizes as both the pins I used a small needlenose pliers to help keep the rod in place and lots of grease on the selector arm, when i could see the hole i placed a small allen key there to prevent the rod falling inside the casing Seems daunting but it isnt that bad
Powers 13 Posted April 8, 2006 I only ask because recently a friend of mine had to do this, he told me he was successful in doing so. However after fitting the gearbox back to the engine he has just realised that he cant select 5th and reverse. So I presumed it was because of the rod falling down into the gearbox and detaching something. Could this have happened? If so would he need to do as miles described and remove the diff to fix it? Cheers lads.
pug_ham 244 3 Cars Posted April 8, 2006 Could this have happened? If so would he need to do as miles described and remove the diff to fix it?Yes & Yes. At least I'm fairly sure this is why he can't select 5th & reverse. Thats what has been the problem for other people where this has happened iirc. Graham. Powers 13 Posted April 8, 2006 Cheers Graham. I guess i will have to do that for him so i will report back the findings.
Powers 13 Posted April 8, 2006 Another few questions. What is the best way of removing the diff in situ? Is it best to remove both driveshafts or could i get away with removing just the passenger side one? Thanks again.
huxley309 0 Posted April 8, 2006 (edited) With the passenger side just unbolt the hub from the wishbone you can pull the wheel and the driveshaft out then...but be careful not to pull your cv boot apart like i did On the drivers side theres 2 L shaped bolts...undo them right to the end but not fully they keep the driveshaft intermediate bearing in place Also with the gearbox in situ you make have problems with the subframe...Id unbolt the lower engine mount just incase so you can tilt the engine forward for clearance Edited April 8, 2006 by huxley309
