Doof 11 Posted April 1, 2006 I went out for a blast today and braking down from 110 to around 40-50 gave massive vibrations. Obviously the brakes have gotten really hot but what could cause them to suddenly start vibration. Its a 1.6 gti so drums at the rear. It felt like it was the fronts but its hard to say for sure. Ideas?
hengti 2 Posted April 1, 2006 wheel balance? susp bush wear? warped discs? - repeated braking from three figure speeds might well have done that!!
Jonmurgie 2 Posted April 1, 2006 Does it now always wobble under breaking or did it only do it that once? Warped Discs isn't the most common thing on the 205 as they aren't heavy cars, though as hengti says repeated high speed breaking can do it!
Doof 11 Posted April 1, 2006 It wasn't particularly hard braking and i'm sure they would have been relatively cool at the time, hasn't really done much hard braking prior to it. The thing is thinking about it, it seemed to disappear once i got going again (i stopped for 5 mins) and used the brakes normally a little so im thinking its not warped discs. Quite possibly suspension bush wear as it feels a bit unstable at times, especially at speed.
nick 3 Posted April 2, 2006 Mine used to do this, I took the calipers off and greased the sliders and that cured it. I imagine that if the sliders were partially seized, they wouldn't pull up to the disc square. Nick
pugrallye 0 Posted April 2, 2006 are you getting vibrations through the peddle, steering wheel or feel it through the body?
Doof 11 Posted April 2, 2006 I cant remember now where i could feel the vibrations. I think i'll whip the wheels off next weekend and check everything over as best i can.
mi16nut 0 Posted April 2, 2006 Mine had slight vibration when braking from high speeds; Donington into the esses, etc., but was generally OK at other times. When I replaced the discs a few weeks ago (upgrade to 307 kit) I found the inside lower edge of one disc had started to degrade. Some of the braking surface had come away & was raised due to rust which in turn had ate into the pad. Try taking it all off, cleaning, inspecting, regreasing the sliders as suggested & refitting. Have you put 1.9 stuff on the front yet as you were planning? If so, I've got some spare calipers, pads & discs that you could borrow for elimination purposes. Mark. Doof 11 Posted April 2, 2006 I havent got round to trying 1.9 stuff yet. Thanks for the offer on the discs pads etc but i've got a box full of 1.9 brakes in the garage. I think i'll just take the oportunity to buy new ATE discs and a set of new pads for the 1.9 calipers. Saying that, i need some 1.9 hubs.....got any of them?
