How Do I Put Alternator Back Together?

Recommended Posts

geoffmslater

I have just replaced my alternator bearings on my mi16 alternator, however putting main middle part back in with the 2 bearings on it back in the alternator has me stumped.

The bushes are in the way ie they are fully sprung out stopping shaft with bearing on it going in,

The haynes manual is bugger all use, and 309/205 manual has only got it for alternators which have bushes able to be removed on their own.

I just can't see a way of doing it, not even with totally stripping alternator.

any help much appreciated

Does the bushes pack not come off like it does on the 8v alternators?

The 405 Haynes manual I have here shows them as being removable just the same.

Is there enough space to hold the bushes in whilst you get the shaft in place?

Graham.

On the outside of the alternator, at the back where the bushes are fowling, you will see small holes. You need to push a peice of stiff wire (paperclip) into these holes thus keeping the bushes compressed in.

Reassemble the alternator and then pull out the wire, the bushes will seat into place.

No pics at the moment, but I can get some tomorrow if you can't see what I mean

I was going to suggest contacting Wurzel as I knew he had done this but I thought he was out of the country so didn't!!

Thanks Nick.

Thanks Wurzel / Graham, i managed it.

Wurzel is correct,

the mi16 alternators are different from the 8v ones in that the bushes do not come out the back.

It looks to me that it would need to be totally stripped down and main wiring unsoldered to do bushes but surely not. I just hope i never have to do them

I'm back for a little while G :D

I swapped the 16v item over for the 8v item purely because the bushes are easier to change (not that it's a regular thing). Getting the alternator out meant dropping the engine slightly to gain clearance in my case.

Glad you got it sorted though :D
