Longun 1 Posted March 31, 2006 Did a quick search but came up with nothing. Is it possible to fit a 1.9 oil cooler to a 1.6? Now I've got carbs I'm able to get the oil temp up more. Its no where near the danger zone just thinking it might be better to cool the oil now as I'm reving the car higher that before. Not expecting power from this mod maybe just a bit more life from the engine. Anyway can it be done. I'm assuming I just need the plate from behind the oil filter and then the pipes and rad block. Has anyone done this before? Am I wasting my time? Cheers
Jonmurgie 2 Posted March 31, 2006 Yes, easy to do... you just need all the parts from a 1.9 GTi and it will bolt into the same place... up and I have all thouse parts, and your close! Drop me a PM if you want to grab my setup
Rob_the_Sparky 9 Posted March 31, 2006 Tis easy. However, the stock oil/air cooler doesn't achieve that much and has no thermostatic controls so will cool the oil even in deep winter! I run my tuned 1.9 without a cooler and have never needed one on the road. Also you are best to use new seals as the originals have more often than not gone hard and you will end up with a big oil leak (original reason mine were taken off!). pug_ham 244 3 Cars Posted March 31, 2006 How high is the oil temp now compared to before? Over cooling the oil is worse than it running what appears to be hot on the guage. Graham.
Longun 1 Posted March 31, 2006 Cheers for the replys Jon PM will be coming your way thanks Graham it used to get to 4 bars which I think is about 90 if I remember from the main site? Quite normal, anyway now I can get it up to just over the 5th bar driving at the same sort of speeds just using more revs so there is a difference in the temps. pug_ham 244 3 Cars Posted March 31, 2006 Oil or water? On a fast run mine (1.9 with oil water heat exchanger) gets to around the 3rd bar on oil temp which is around 95' & in the ideal temp range. Under normal running it sits on 90'. AFAIK the thicker white lines on the guage are where the guage should be sat to keep it in the best temp range, 90' to 110'. Graham. Longun 1 Posted March 31, 2006 Counted the bars wrong. DOH! Its oil and it gets to just over the 4th bar now hard driving. Used to be on the 3rd (thick one like me). Do people think its worth it?
Rob_the_Sparky 9 Posted March 31, 2006 Well it isn't hard to fit and should be cheap enough, can't see new o-rings costing much, so you may as well give it a try. It can only get worse as the weather warms up.
Jonmurgie 2 Posted March 31, 2006 To be fair I run my Mi with no oil cooler on the track and only after 20 minutes of hard driving does the oil temp get to around the 4th mark... But yeah, if you fancy giving it a go then I've got all the bits, and mine wasn't leaking when I took it off
Anthony 1,003 Posted March 31, 2006 To be fair I run my Mi with no oil cooler on the track and only after 20 minutes of hard driving does the oil temp get to around the 4th mark... Have you got an alloy sump per-chance? They're a far more effective oil cooler than that waste of time that is the standard 1.9 item - indeed, if anything, for a road car the alloy sump is too effective and you struggle to get any heat in the oil during winter... Jonmurgie 2 Posted March 31, 2006 Nope, not on the current engine (from a BX) so it's the tin sump! Not sure whay the temp doesn't get higher sooner but there we go... WILL be fitting an oil cooler with the new engine though
Henry Yorke 269 3 Cars Posted April 2, 2006 My CTI turbo has an ally sump on it now and the oil temp rarely seems to move. This doesn't have an oil cooler as standard (though it is a 1.9). I was paranoid about it not having the oil cooler, considering Turbo Technics uprated the 1.9 one as standard on their conversion so I believe, however it doesn't seem too bad, though it has not had any prolonged thrashing yet.
