Great Advice For Putting The Head Back On.

Recommended Posts

Guest BrainFluid

Just got this great advice for when your putting the had back on, in the right position first time.

Take a few of your old head bolts and cut the heads off them. Then cut a screw driver sized groove into the top of them.

Now screw them part way into your block and use them as guides for putting your head back on!

Finger screw the rest of your new head bolt in then screw the guide bolts out.

Brilliant! (esp when like me your head has a wopping great manifold and turbo attached to it)

Nate.

good tip! you can also use old headbolts with some of the legnth cut off to clamp down your wetliners and stop them moving.

Or you could just use the dowels provided to fit the head on right first time possibly ? :)

I cant remeber the last time i had a head, that didnt have dowels to locate on. And i do them most weeks!!

Though not juts pugs. Normally there is 2 or more dowels in the block itself. Not very big,and sometimes u dont get new ones in head set.

Okay you got the old Brian confuzed now...

Are you talking about the metal bit that sticks out of the head? If so theres no way that I was going to rely on that alone! Theres only one of these on my XUD7T head and its about 1cm long. I much prefere the thought of sliding the head down there of these made up bolts from more of a height as I have not got a hoist only a weakling neighbour to help lower the head onto the block.

If this isnt what your talking about um, what dowels are you talking about :)

U shouldnt need help to lower the head !!! Wheres ur weetabix. I cant say for sure on ur engine, but every engine ive done had dowels, that should stay in the block. Normally 2 in opposing corners. Sometimes they are replaced in the head set.

there not very big like u say, just gives the head something to engage on.

Ur method is fine, just drawn out if there is dowels to use. If not, then ur laughing

LOLS

My head is well heavy even with a bowl of wheatabix! Its got a sodding great turbo on it that has to be attached to the head coz theres so little room in the engine bay of a turbo diesel 205.

To just lift the head off I had to climb on top of the bay belive it or not!

Theres only one of these little metal dowels in one corner (and thats on the head) and I am worried about it not going on straight/ having to move it straight and displacing the gasket.

Anyhoots, good to chat man.

Nate.

AHHHH I get it now! Tommorow I'll see if that metal dowel in the head will come out (i thought it was a bit odd and would get in the way of the skim) and see if in the other corner theres a hole where a missing one could be.

Thanks very much mate.
