could anyone advise me on whats wrong..after the engine is warm the car wont idle, ( 1991 205 gti), whenever i coast ( i know i shouldnt) the engine will cut out on me. This only happens after the engine is warm, doesnt happen when the engine is cold, although when it is cold the revs rise and fall when idling from around 1K to 2K, please remember that i'm almost a complete novice with mechanics, so i will need as full an explanation as poss if you dont mind too much, thanks

There are loads of old threads relating to this sort of subject - so you could try a search :)

GTi engines are renowned for their ropy injection system.... always cause grief.

 

However, I've just had a similar case with my girlfriends goodwood - swapped the air flow meter, and jobs a good one. You can pick one up for around £15 second hand (remember to get the corrrect 1.6 or 1.9 version), but they are reapairable to some extent. Sometimes the spring (for the flap) looses its tension, but you can tweak that by taking the cover off. Or sometimes the tracks for the pot wear out. I believe there is a guide for this too on here.

After swapping or adjusting the spring, you'll need to reset the mixture - pop to your local MOT place and ask to see if they will let you use their 'sniffer' for an emissions check, and tweak the allen key in the AFM to suit.

It could also be that someone has adjusted the idle screw down in an attempt to control the cold idle only to kill the warm idle.

 

Cold idle is more of an issue generally, hot idle is usually easier to sort out. Replacing the AFM as a first option is a sledge hammer approach, there are other things that can be done first that are cheaper.

 

Do a search on idle issues and look for things such as:

 

Cleaning the AFM

Replacing the ECU temp sensor

Cleaning the throttle body

The SAD (Supplementary Air Device)

 

Good luck searcing
