Are Theses Clean Enough?

Recommended Posts

Guest BrainFluid

Hi.

Can anyone who has changed a head gasket if these bores are clean enough for the head to go back on?

What kind of condition do you think they look like too?

Thanks,

Nate.

Honing marks aren't very visible but at least the bores aren't glazed. I notice a previous owner has just used water for coolant!! (brown water ways).

Funny pistons too! What engine is it?

I thought that, i'm guessing it's a diesel...

Clean the block face more, the bores look clean enough.. from this distance anyway..

it's said that if you can rub a clean cloth lightly oiled on the metal and bring it away with NO dirty marks on it it's clean enough.. you might be there a long time though, you'll have to cut your losses!

Bores look OK.. last pic though possibly shows a crack but I guess that's just a lighting effect as it's pretty obvious if it were a crack!

One thing though, the block face is no where near clean or smooth enough yet... I assume that's still to be done?

Oh, and that must be from his 205 STDT

Sure is :D

Nope its not a crack its a score :( . Its not very deep though guess that its just about livable with.

Yeh I aint cleaned the face up yet! Starting to get worried about the ammount of WD40 thats ending up inside the block too! If i use a scraper on it would a metal ruler be too much? And shoould I worry about the ammount of crap that will end up in the water ways because of scraping it?

Haynes reccomends putting some grease around the lip of the pistons at TDC to stop getting crap from the clean in them, I take it that this is good advice.

Thanks for your replies, looks like I'm happy enough to go and get the head skimmed now.

1 Change the oil!

2 flush and change coolant!

3 for once the haynes bumper book of cut and paste lies has some good advice!

NO METAL RULER!! unless it is an exceptionally good one, in which case you won't want to ruin an exceptionally nice rule..

And tape up the oil holes and such to minimise the s*ite getting in.. if you can..

this kind of job is all about how much care you have and arseholes and elbows work.. there is no cheat..

possible cheat! : http://www.frost.co.uk/item_Detail.asp?productID=8612

these are great for cleaning up gasket mating faces - if you're *careful*

they whip right through anything, incl rust - BUT they disintegrate if you push on them too hard - they're made of some of poly weave which flicks little bits off if you're too firm with them

make light work of a block face

obviously plug up the bores and the water/oil ways as far as is practicable. once you've experienced how easily they clean up metal, you'll realise you won't want any bits off one of these floating around inside the engine

they sell 'em in B&Q too - but they are expensive

another upside is that you'll never use a wire brush again

i love these things! :D

Well I gots plenty of time on my hands and i do want to do a good job so arseholes and elbows it is!

Whats the best way of cleaning the face then Haynes says a "blunt scraper" but what would you reccomend as one?

Nate.

(thanks Hengti! looks like we were both writing and repling at the same time! That thing looks serious! Maybe i'll use one if I canne find a blunt scraper!!!)
