Mankee 0 Posted March 29, 2006 Hi all. Just wondering if anyone can help me with what XU engines have alloy and iron sumps, and which can fit an Mi16 engine. Dave at RetroFord, a good friend of PPC magazine, has said that he'd be up for having a go at trying to make a well baffled sump to stop Mi16 oil surge problems during hard cornering. Is there a steel sump (possibly from a diesel block?) that would fit an Mi16 engine, which may be easier to work with than an alloy sump? Cheers. Any help greatly appreciated. Mankee. Kitsune 0 Posted March 29, 2006 Doesn't the 8v GTi steel sump bolt straight on the 16v?
Richie-Van-GTi 71 2 Cars Posted March 29, 2006 The s16 sump should fit but I thought the oil surge issues were more down to the oil getting back down to the sump rather than the sump itself?
huxley309 0 Posted March 29, 2006 (edited) Steel sumps will be smooth all round and the ally sumps will have cooling fins on the underside Go for steel as it makes fitting the baffle a lot easier...usually means a tig welder for ali Edited March 29, 2006 by huxley309

Only one way to cure that... dry sump Though for a road car it's an expensive faff! There's a pic of an AMAZING sump baffle on this forum somewhere, a search would hopfully pull it up. It's something that I'd say would be the best thing before going dry sump... well there is acusump but there's a mixed feeling of whether it's any good! steige 1 1 Cars Posted March 29, 2006 Are the 1.9 and 1.6 sumps exactly the same?
easypug 0 Posted March 29, 2006 Surely there would never be a need for a baffled sump in a purely road car. I've got a few pics of my baffled sump if you want to see them?
C_W 3 1 Cars Posted March 29, 2006 Are the 1.9 and 1.6 sumps exactly the same? No, a 1.6 sump is deeper (on it's own) as the shallower 1.9 sump is combined with a "spacer" plate to make the same sump depth overall. 1.9 steel sump is the same as the 1.9 mi16 alloy sump depth (ie both have spacers).
