Starting Issues - Which Wires Do I Bypass?

Recommended Posts

dd_156ar

Hello guys, 1st post so please be gentle...

I recently bought an '89 1.9 GTI and am just sorting through all the 'issues' that came with the car. The search facility on this forum has been my saviour. ;)

To my question;

Occassionally the starter will not turn over the engine. Just a click and then nothing. I understand this could just be not enough power getting to the starter solenoid becasue of the infamous brown multiplug... For now I just want reliable starting so would like to connect direct from the ignition switch to the starter but what do I connect and to where? Pictures would be great but a general description of what colour wire to connect to where and how to route the wire would be just as appreciated.

Cheers!

Dan

Well first it might be a knackered starter motor sticking as it's quite common on older starters (do you know how old the motor is?). Granted it's probably cheaper to wire in a bypass but that may still not solve the issue.

I have, however, wired around my 'ignition' starter and fitted a push button as I was getting random issues as well and a new starter DIDN'T fix it! Thing is, I didn't fit it so can't tell you exaclty what to do...
