Building A Rally Spec Engine On A Budget!

Recommended Posts

PUGugly

I want to get an engine built for my 1.9 8v. Shenpar can build a rally spec head with cams, rebuilt and ballanced bottom end (various other bits!!) with a est power of around 180 bhp on my existing motorbike carbs for around 2.5k. Has anybody had work done by them before and what did they think of it? Did anybody get an engine built by another company? If so who and what did it cost, power made and reliability???? Any good ideas for getting a real fast car on a budget? :D BAFFLED!!! :D

I assume you have read Puma's website on the 8v ?

Pumas site is a good read, make sure you read the bit on the 16v engine too.

Is the car an actual rally car? I.e do you have to keep the 1.9 8v engine?

If you are going to rally and want something quick get the gearbox done at the same time. Its quite amazing how much BHP can be lost through worn bearings etc. and a 4.8 CWP works very well in the forest. Top speed is down but you can get there real quick

Thanks for the plug easypug! Not trying to blow my own trumpet but my engine does sound exactly like the sort of thing you are after for a fraction of the cost. All it needs is a suitable exhaust manifold and twin 45's to be pushing 185 bhp.

Edit: The price in that link is wrong, if you are interested give me a pm.

Don't need to keep the 8v but mi engines cost a packet to rebuild don't they? How much work is involved in putting in a gti 6 engine? Do they drop onto the excisting engine mounts?

I wouldn't have thought the Mi would cost much more than the 8v to rebuild, except for the head but then even that's not 'too' much more. If you have no restrictions to engines then the Mi makes sense as you will have 160/170 straight away for MUCH less than 2.5k!!

What about the gti6 engines and the s16's. Are these better options as they are newer so less tired!!

not really a 'better' option I'd have thought and in some respects not as good as the Mi. I'd expect buying a GTi6 engine would be more than an Mi so your already starting off on the wrong foot!

But personally, I only have experience of the Mi so I'll wait and see what others say about GTi6 vs. Mi
