Pot Paint Instead Of Spray For Rims

Recommended Posts

Yo!

Am about to refurbish 5 speedline 1.9 gti rims and was wondering if pot paint would be just as good as spray paint with a little more sanding down to minimise brush stroke lines?

I'm going to try it anyway seen as it'll be a hell of a lot cheaper that buying piddly ammounts of paint in spray cans from halfrauds.

Just wondering if anyone else has tried it or has any tips on getting a reasonable if not perfect finish?

Thanks,

Nate.

im no expert but i would have thought that u would see the brush strokes and it will never be as good a finish as using a paint gun.

Well obviously :P

But. (theres always a but is there not) With a good few coats and plenty of sanding on the last coat surely that would take it down to a pretty good final finish?

Of course I am no expert in these matters either but (there we go again) exactly how close would you have to get to see the odd brush stroke? I rarely get closer than a meter away from someones rims. No pun intended.

I have done 2 of my wheels with spray cans the results were ok, but honestly I can't imagine it working very well with a brush. It takes quite a while to sand a whole wheel. Also you have the primer and laquer to think about.

I wait to see what paintguy says.

I would say you could get a good finish brush painting.

One definite advantage with using a brush is you can get more paint on. I've found that the paint can come off quite easily if you knock the wheels that have been repainted with a gun. I've had it with professionally refurbished wheels and those that I've done myself.

Like you say in your post if you take your time and sand it down well between coats then I think you should get a good durable finish. I would get a decent brush with fine bristles on. Maybe thin the paint a bit as well.

I was in Halfords the other day and they had tins of coach paint in about 10 different colours for about £5 a tin. You would probably be better going to a paint factors and getting them to mix you up 1/2 litre of paint in whatever colour you wanted. It should be pretty cheap for 1/2L.

If you think about coach painting that was always done with a brush and looks good. Don't know how true this is but I was told that Rolls-Royce used to brush paint all their cars up to the 1960s because you got a better and more durable finish that way.
