Dave_McC 0 Posted March 25, 2006 Recently bought an f ref 1.6 205 cti, and trying to sort out why it's gutless. Having removed the dizzy to replace the vacuum advance which was knackered, I've found a couple of broken wires and need to work out where they should be connected. There are 3 wires which come out of a much bigger brown connector which sits on top of the gearbox, towards the front. These 3 wires (red, yellow and white) run under the dizzy, and the red one connects to a sensor screwed into the rear of the thermostat housing (nearest the passenger side). The yellow and white are both broken and go nowhere! There's another bigger sensor screwed into the rear of the thermostat housing (to the drivers side of the other one), with no wire on it (though there is a spade connector which I suspect once had a wire in it!). There's also a broken wire tie-wrapped to the rear of the engine, the other end of which goes to a sensor screwed into the rear of the sump - drivers side - which I assume is the oil temp sender. So, can anyone tell me what should be connected where? Cheers Dave
pug_ham 244 3 Cars Posted March 25, 2006 Brown conector is the infamous brown multi plug that can be a cause of starter motor problems. From memory these wires are the coolant temp switch (yellow wire), coolant temp sender (red wire) & the white is the oil temp sender wire which should be connected to the one you've found coming from the sump sensor. Dave_McC 0 Posted March 25, 2006 (edited) Cheers Graham What does the coolant temp switch do - I assume this is the other sensor I found adjacent to what is presumably the sensor for the temp gauge (with the red wire connected to it)? I assume the coolant temp sensor for the ECU is the large brown sensor on the side of the coolant chamber which has the SAD bolted to it? Sorry for all the questions - I'm learning my way around the Pug engine layout and Haynes is not overly helpful.... Thanks Dave Edited March 25, 2006 by Dave_McC
pug_ham 244 3 Cars Posted March 26, 2006 It switches the small red light on on the guage (which in turn triggers the STOP one to become illuminated) when the temperature gets to hot telling you to switch the engine off or risk its death. IIRC temp guage sender is the bigger of the two sensors screwed into the back of the thermostat housing, small one being warning switch. If you connect them in the wrong order you 'll have no temperature indication & the red warning light will glow faint constantly. Coolant temp sensor & plug should be blue. Coolant temp sensor doesn't have any thing to do with the guages, its just for the ecu cold start enrichment. Graham.
Dave_McC 0 Posted March 26, 2006 Thanks. The temp gauge is working, and as the sensor which was connected was the smaller one I assume this is the right way round. I'll connect the other 2 wires up while the dizzy's out and I've got better access. Cheers Dave
