wildejon 7 Posted March 25, 2006 (edited) Just driven my car, rather shorter journey than planned... Everytime I started from standstill the brakes seemed to be still applied. This felt like it was the rear as the rear right of the car was sinking a lot (must have loked extremely weird to passers-by) as I gave it a bit of power before taking off and all was fine...until I stopped again. I have done a search but I'm still not sure what the problem is. I'm guessing either the shoes are completely worn and are getting stuck to grooves in the drum (they have been squeaking a bit, I was going to check them yesterday but it was raining, typical) or the springs in the drum are shot. I guess it feels like the handbrake is on even if I've only applied the footbrake. Any help very much appreciated! (btw, I changed my front O/S driveshaft on Thursday, can't see how it's related but thought I should say so, just incase) Edited March 25, 2006 by wildejon
Guest rick03054 Posted March 25, 2006 Jack the rear of the car up and try to turn the wheel. If either of them are hard to turn then it's binding and you need to do the brakes. Is it happening on both sides? It couldn't be an over adjusted handbrake could it?
pug_ham 244 3 Cars Posted March 25, 2006 When a similar thing happened on one of my old 205's it was the front flexi hoses that were restricting the fluid & holding the brakes on. Theyhad broken down internally but looked fine externally. I know of a few mates that have had the same thin but never to the extent that mine got to (quiet rapidly as well, one day they were fine next day I had to abort a journey & return home to fix them). nick 3 Posted March 25, 2006 As Graham says, it happened on mine too. Nick
wildejon 7 Posted March 25, 2006 Cheers for your replies Just had a look now and it was fine... I didn't drive too far though. Now I don't know what to do at all! The rears are still squeaky so I need to take them apart and have a butchers but you might be right about the front Graham. It's weird that it happened after I did the drive shaft and obviously moved the front flexi about quite a bit during the re-fitting process... Having said that, it didn't ever seem to keep braking when I was pushing and releasing the brakes while still moving. It only ever happened when I was completely standstill and tried to start moving again. Where do you think I should start? Maybe just the rears and then see if it still does it? Could this be a bit dangerous too? Thanks everyone Jon
pug_ham 244 3 Cars Posted March 26, 2006 One way of checking if the front or rear brakes is brake to a halt on a hill (facing up it) & release the brakes, if it lifts the back then the rears are sticking but if it just stays or rolls very slowly & suddenly frees up its the fronts imo. wildejon 7 Posted March 26, 2006 Cool, cheers. I'm just off to take it to my parents where I can work on it now, I'll give that a go. Cheers :-)
