shepherdfte 0 Posted March 24, 2006 Hi all - question about the engine on my 1.6. Rather protracted explanation, but here goes: Car was a very mint 115k miler when I bought it, and I then put a cage in it to do road rallies, track days and use as my daily hack. It's now done 130k, with about 2k of that competitive, perhaps 7k round the corner to work, but (and this might be important) about 7k at high speed (5000rpm plus) on the motorway (most of it in one short 3 month period). Always had fresh oil every 2k, and very well maintained. Now, the problem. For a while, the engine has been slowly starting to sound more 'tinny' or perhaps rattly when on load at any sort of rpm (say above 3000). I.e. when coasting it sounds smooth as anything, but as soon as the throttle is opened enough to start driving the car, it starts to rattle. Not pinking (i.e. not only at high throttle openings), but kind of a cammy rattle. Now, I went through a load of stuff a couple of months ago: Cam came out (and was replaced as one lobe was worn due to a blocked spray bar), and the valves were shimmed up (they were all fine anyway). New cam belt tensioner fitted (plus belt), and a new alternator. Also, the exhaust centre-box was removed for clearance. To my irritation, the rattle remained. The other day I did a track day (6k rpm all day), and had to do a mad m-way dash for 40 miles on the red-line as I forgot the helmets for same. So the engine got a right old caning. Back driving to work again, it now sounds much much worse. Very tinny as you rev it, sounding quite bad at max chat. Seems a bit down on power as well. Still full of nice clean oil though. Reading on here suggests that sustained high rpm running may have done the small ends - does that tie up with my symptoms? Bear in mind it purrs like a kitten at idle and coasting - hence I don't think it's the valve train? Oh yes - I've always had good oil pressure although it drops a lot if the idle gets below about 1100. so, small ends? All thoughts gratefully received! Pugnut 9 1 Cars Posted March 25, 2006 i'de put a tenner on it being a cracked exhaust manifold or leaking gasket have you checked them? a cracked manifold or blown gasket doesnt sound like a blown exhaust but more like a rattly top end noise
j_turnell 137 3 Cars Posted March 25, 2006 As above sounds like a cracked manifold.
shepherdfte 0 Posted March 25, 2006 Thanks guys, but I only recently fitted a new mani, complete with new gaskets and studs (migod the old one was a sod to get off!). I will check again when I fit my new exhaust new week, but any other thoughts? ta, Andy
pug_ham 245 3 Cars Posted March 26, 2006 Did you use genuine Peugeot gaskets for the manifold & downpipe? I fitted the ones thet came with a rebuild kit & they hardly lasted 1k before they were blowing. Graham.

Graham. Happily, yes. One of the few parts from Pug that wasn't too expensive!
shepherdfte 0 Posted May 2, 2006 UPDATE Thanks chaps. I replaced the entire exhaust system with an Arvin one (well recommended top quality thanks guys), and found the splitter in my old pipe was blown away right down about 6" (despite checking ages ago). My noise is now gone So thanks one and all - you we're all in the ball park with the manifold area! Now I just need to figure why the power is a bit random!
