Final Drive Swapping Info

Recommended Posts

Ive searched and cant quite find definative answers to my questions.

What effect would there be on putting a 1.6 final drive onto a 1.9 box and also vice versa. Can the final drives be swapped between be1 and be3 also how hard is it to swap the final drive and is there a guide anywhere?

What Im basically after is putting a be3 into my 1.9 for the reverse location and better clutch mechanism then running it with an MI flywheel (lightened) and clutch (215mm). But my Be3 box is a 1.6 box, I want to retain slightly better fuel consumption on long journeys as Im taking the car to the ring. Am I thinking theright way round that the 1.9 final drive on a 1.6 would be better on long journeys?

the only differences between the 1.6 and 1.9 gearbox's are the 1st gear and final drive so if you are putting a 1.9 final drive into a 1.6 box, you basically have a 1.9 gearbox. Would be easier to just source a 1.9 gearbox and put that in but also keep the 1.6 box and swap it back when you feel like it.

Swapping final drives involves striping the gearbox and swaping the crown wheel and pinion

You can download an excel file with all the different gear ratios so you can find the configuration you need:

If you want better fuel consumption then perhaps a straight Mi16 'box would be best as it's got nice and close 1/2/3 and a long 5th for cruising :D Have a play with the excel file and see what you think!

OK so general consesus is that the final drive swap wont really make any difference, if thats the case I'll just stick with the 1.9 box. Anyone know best place to order a full set of gear linkages from? Current ones are a bit loose and gear change can be sloppy. Its the BE1 box.

Thanks
