Little Metal Rod Thing

I just took the car out for its first run since the clutch was done, and on the way back the clutch went to the floor... It seems that the little metal rod has somehow fallen out, and as it's dark i don't think it will be found.

 

I did a quick search, but i suspect my terms were a little... "vague", and i didn't have much luck.

 

So, can anyone tell me exactly how long the bit of metal has to be? And is there a way of improving this design? (so it doesn't fall out next time i go out for a chocolate fix!)

its about an inch long, quarter inch in diameter cylinder, rounded at both ends IIRC.

Donn't know the size of the pin , but mine is cross drilled and retained by twisted lock wire

Thanks guys, i thought that was what it looked like...

 

Drilling a hole in it and wiring it in sounds like a good idea though. I think it is my fault it fell out, (i was playing with the clutch when it happened) but it seems like a fairly bad design...

It is, I much prefer the later BE3 design arm that is much simply in design and makes the clutch lighter.

I was looking in my 405 (Be3) trying to work out the differences, and that setup does look much better. That bit of metal just looks like such a (typically french) afterthought.

Iv'e got a M6 screw through mine.

Thats a 10mm hex head machine screw to me and you.

An M7 might fit better though (11mm hex) but these arn't a Brittish standard so are hard to get hold of.

Interestingly I have one BE1 car with a much lighter clutch than the rest, the one I have been replacing/lubricating bits on so clutch weight may have a lot to do with maintenance...

 

Oh and yes it is a crap design.

Interestingly, arm 'hole' that the rod sits in has a flanged outer edge, suggesting there is meant to be a rubber gaiter over the wretched thing. Anybody able to confirm or deny this? Certainly makes the clutch ligher if you grease it, but without protection, it doesn't last long!

Ok graham, i still can't find it. (i spent a good 20 minutes looking) It doesn't matter though, as i can find out fairly easily through a mate.

 

And while the Be3 design is better, i agree with rob that the Be1 weight is fine. With the new clutch in mine i certainly wouldn't want it to be any lighter.

 

One more question - does that little rod need to be the exact right length? Surely if it is too long the clutch cable could just be loosened? Or would that upset things...?

 

I just ordered two of them through peugeot for $4...

Luckily for you I still had the rod on the table around my pc.:D

8mm diameter

42mm long.

Both ends radiused smooth.
