My Diy Wheels Refurb Has Started...

Recommended Posts

Mace1981

Hey, I Just thought i'd take you through how im refurbishing these wheels myself and what it takes do it properly, I'll keep you updated as i do them, This may be of some use to people in future. :P

I brought a set of 1900 speedlines off of Feb a week or so ago with the view to refurbing them myself. They had been sprayed black with a silver rim, rather like goodwoods but a different colour. Three were in good condition and the other not so great. I decided that i wanted them as they should be. Original Goodwood, bar the polished rim :)

Here are the wheels before i started.

Before

Before

I made the decision to go with spraying the outer rim in a bright silver instead of diamond cutting as most people ive spoken to have warned about oxidization and laquer not taking. Now for color choice on the centres and rim.

After reading a few posts relating to the "Goodwood" colour i decided to go with Rover Steel Grey as this has been said to be the best match, There are two different shades of this colour and i went for the second, being slightly darker. For the rim i used Ford Moondust silver in its brightest shade.

Here are the Paint codes as they are on the tin.

Rover Steel Grey - LM2 RG B-7-0880-3.

Ford Moon Dust Silver - FEU 0 b-7-138s-4.

I also decided to have the wheels sandblasted. As the Paint had been Baked on it would prove hard to shift bby hand. A guy on my local ind. Estate did this for me and i must say that they have come back to me in an exeptional condition. I was worried that the finish wouldnt be smooth and that it would be marked but i was wrong... :(

This is as far as i am at the moment and i thought it would be good to share it with you guys. Will be prepping for spraying this weekend and perfecting my spraying technique. Im a bit of a noob when it comes to guides, this is my first atempt so be gentle with me. Once ive finished them i'll probably write a complete guide with alot a detail and a proper structure. Will post more pics on sunday evening.

PS, sorry if this is in the wrong section, if it is can someone move it to the right one for me? :D

There are already 2 guides on the main site, hence the reason I haven't bothered doing one myelf, but please keep us updated with your progress :)

It's nice to see someone doing what I would call a 'proper' refurbishment, rather than just sanding and painting them, and calling them refurbished, which they aren't, they're just resprayed!

'Blasting looks to be nice and fine too - just what you want really :(

Bugger, didnt realise someone had already done one! doh!

I wanted to do them properly and not "respray" them so i thought sandblasting was the only way to go really. The thought crossed my mind to laquer them as they are! :) joke!

Paintguy/ Anybody else - Dont suppose you would know an paint codes for a colour similar to what the Civic Type R wheels use? Kind of like a goodwood colour only lighter? Tried some Ford Graphite Grey Metallic but it seems a little too dark for my liking.

Yeah I actually quite like the kinda sparkly effect mine were after I sandblasted them.

Might look a bit Heath Robinson on the car tho...

I would suggest maybe finding a very good picture of the colour you want and taking it to a paint specialist, i would of thought they would be able to match it up. either that or speak to some peeps on Honda forums. just an idea.

On the last set of CTR wheels I painted, I just used a bit of silver, and tinted it darker by eye. But then I have been doing this for a while ;)

If you get no joy from their forums, I'll see if I can find the correct code for you, or something very similar.

This might be too late, but I painted a set yesterday, and used Honda Sliverstone Metalic, colour code NH630M. Almost a perfect match :)

woll: Depends where you go, I've been quoted anything from £20 to £40 each.

A search will bring up all you need to know about the difference between Speedline and SMR wheels, but basically the former are Italian made, slightly lighter and allegedly better quality.
