driversdomainuk 8 Posted March 19, 2006 Hi I have been quoted 18 hrs labour for a garage to: Re grind the crank fit new piston rings fit new main bearings fit new big end bearing etc..... Is this an excessive amount of time as with parts (£250ish) it will be over £900... I am in no need of having it rebuilt yet - they even said wait 6 months and see how the engine is. Cheers Rob
hengti 2 Posted March 19, 2006 does this include removal of engine/strip down/replacement into car? i'd say it was a bargain if it does! i've do direct experience of tinkering with 205internals - but, on the face of it, would've thought that 18hr was excessive to do just what you've listed
sorr 0 Posted March 19, 2006 I do not actually think that is excessive, but it could be done for far less is fo do it yourself. Given you have some time to play with I would buy a second hand engine rebuild that so you can do a swap over a weekend.
jack biscuit 0 Posted March 19, 2006 depends how clean things need to be? and what you'll find on the way.. My friend is having some work done to an a series at bes, aston fields bromsgrove. That's full balance, four new oversized pistons and rings , offset bore during rebore, extra studs in block.. lightened flywheel.. orange pressure plate, crank regrind and new bearing shells i'm sure. about £780 if i recall correctly.. that might put it in perspective
j_turnell 137 3 Cars Posted March 19, 2006 That seems a lot of money too me! what does that 18 hours labour include??
driversdomainuk 8 Posted March 19, 2006 That seems a lot of money too me! what does that 18 hours labour include?? Hi - The 18 hrs is for doing all the work outlined above from stripping from the engine to doing the work and replacing everything.....drive in drive out! hengti 2 Posted March 19, 2006 if it ever needs doing and you feel you can trust the garage - i'd go for it at that price it's alot of work!
notamondayfan 44 Posted March 20, 2006 i dont think thats a too bad price. especially as its a drive in / drive out job. they prob said 18hrs (nrly 3 days) to cover their backs. would advise new oil pump and seals, as the engines gonna b in peices anyway. Alastairh 47 Posted March 20, 2006 I would look around more companies and get some more quotes first.
Rom 0 Posted March 20, 2006 (edited) That does sound quite excessive to me tbh. Im guessing that there sending off the crank,as most garages, hell. A lot of machine shops cant regrind cranks ! So that is probably figuring into the bill . Id be much more inclined to get another lump to rebuild in ur own time as already suggested. eob 7 Posted March 21, 2006 Wow. Being from Ireland, I'm not sure if any of you guys would trust the workmanship here [] but my engine is with a guy in Rathnew, an incredible engine builder with every CNC machine you could possibly buy, and to weld a crack and completely rebuild my Mi16 he'll charge about 350. That's about £270 sterling. Wonder is there a market out there for completely refurbed Mi16's on Ebay?
petert 586 Posted March 21, 2006 It seems very cheap to me. I certainly wouldn't offer that for 18 hrs. There's 5-6 hrs. or so just to get the engine in and out. That leaves just 12 hrs for a rebuild. I'd be actually concerned about what you're getting. Why aren't you doing the head while it's all apart?
