Gearbox For 1.9 8v

Recommended Posts

SPGTi

Ok I need a new gearbox for my road rally car. I have at the moment the broken 1.9 8v box on the car, a MI16 box that whines and 3rd to 4th is not very good, and should be picking up a good 1.9 8v box next weekend.

There are lots of threads about different gearboxes on Mi engined cars but no information on NA 1.9 8v engined cars.

Is it worth changing the final drive in the good 1.9 box to the Mi final drive ?

Is it worth doing anything to the box before it goes on the car ie change bearings ?

How easy and what is generally involved in refurbing the gearbox ?

Any help appreciated.

cheers

Steve

I'd find another mi box tbh, I don't belive any other combination will get you to 100mph significantly faster, and you still have a decently tall 4th/5th for straights and normal driving.

My thoughts as to what its worth would be to fit the Mi CWP to the good 1.9 box, you will suffer from lower top speed in 5th but how often are in 5th at 6000 rpm on a night rally ??? You will gain from better get up and go out of tight hairpins and twisty bits.

If you want to know how to physiaclly change the CWP then log onto the Peugeot 205 Challenge web site and in the 1.6 engined technical section do a search for a 4.4 CWP and a guys name of Ian Winstanley and there is a link to a step by step idiot proof guide with photo's on the whole swap.

The 1.9 8v box with an Mi final drive is very very nice & short. I've no personal esperience of it on an 8v as I only fitted it to my Mi. I did have the standard 1.9 8v 'box on my Mi when it first went in and it was utterly utterly s*itE! Best thing is if you can get the Mi final drive in the 8v box give it a go and see how that works for you

I'm going to try a 1.6 gearbox on mine soon & then finalise my new gearbox build spec with Miles asap. I think I'll end up with a 1.9 on 1.6 FD for mine.

If your engine likes to rev & has a higher limit then it should be better suited to the 1.6 FD rather than the lower Mi one imo. Halfwayhouse to make use of the extra torque the 1.9 develops to counteract the outright revability when compared to the Mi.

Graham.

Thanks for the replies.

Also thanks to Alex205Mi16 and Adam young for the free gearboxes to raid for parts.

Here is the step by step article on changing the CWP CHANGING CWP. Maybe the author would allow this to go on the main site ?

Any more opinions ideas etc gratefully received.

Chris, I think this picture might have come in handy when we were trying to strip yours :angry:

Definately worth contacting the author I reckon. That'd be a handy article to have on the main site.

I had a 1.6 with Mi FD solely for track use and it was pretty good once you got going but on shorter tracks 1st and 2nd were just too short.

Building the rally car at the moment and going for 1.9 with Mi FD - Its unlikely I'll be doing much over 100MPH at any of the events but gives me the slightly longer 1st and 2nd which will probably get used a fair bit.

I use to have a Grp A spec. 8V with 1.9 gearbox and Mi final drive. I thought it was the ants pants. I don't understand how anyone could say 1st and 2nd are too short, as Mi16 1st and 2nd are indentical ratios! It's 3rd and 4th when things really start to accelerate. Highly recommended for track use.

Ok, so at the moment I am undecided about the choice between the 1.6 and MI final drive.

Once I do decide and the gearbox is in pieces is there anything that is worth changing ? ie diff bearings etc.

cheers
