Running An Mi On Stand Alone Ignition.

Recommended Posts

a up fellas, im going to be running the mi in my car on r1 bike carbs, but i am undecieded on what ignition system to run. i have got an adaptor so that i can run it on 8valve ignition, but then i looked at the practical performance sprint car and they have a coil pack sat on the bulk head and no dizzy on the head. can this be done using scrap yard parts? can you pull a signal off the standard mi fly wheel using that mounting on the gear box? i have already tried doing a search and came up with no real answers. there has to be a way of doing it without spending £300 on a lumination set up. thanks very much, dave.

If you want to run with a coil pack then you will need to go full mappable ECU... The choices are mostly £££ dependant (I personally run a MoTeC M48) with things like Omex, Emerald, KMS, Lumination etc. Run some searces on those and see what info you can find. A few guys are trying out the relatively new KMS stuff as it seems very well priced, though I must say I have no personal experience of any of those systems other than MoTeC

The cheapest option has to be the 8v dizzy and dizzy adaptor, at around £60, but this still limits you to a clockwork dizzy, which i regard as a bit of a waste if youve gone to the expense/hassle of fitting a bike carbs!

The next cheapest option is the megajolt, a diy mapable ignition ecu, talk to dr seuss on this one as he knows a lot about he megasquirt.

The next cheapest is probably the KMS (thou emerald/omex etc all do ignition only ecus). Personally would be tempted to spend the little bit extra and get a full KMS ecu thou, as that gives you a lot more flexibility in the future. Im running a KMS on my 106, despite a few teething troubles its very sweet and QEP have been exceptionally helpful. www.engine-management.co.uk i think or pm matsav.

sorry to be abit dim, but im quite new to these stand alone systems. i looked at the KMS website. do i just need a ignition driver and loom from them and then do i need to find an actual coil pack from some where else? will i then need a lap top to set the thing up? D-9, how much has your set up cost, (i you don't mind me asking).
