eob 7 Posted March 17, 2006 Just a couple of questions. I picked up a battered Mi16 engine for peanuts, it's now off being refurbed by Robbie at TDP. He's convinced he can get 200bhp out of it for very few provided I can ship it up there running Motronic and not Jetronic. My car is a '92 J reg running poxy Jetronic, how difficult is it to swap? I've put a Motronic engine in a 205 and hated the amount of hassle I got (106 XSi engine into a 205 XS), is there a quick and simple way of fitting an Mi16 with Motronic? Any Motronic set-up will do, preferrably something that's going to work straight out of the box without blowing my car up
d-9 0 Posted March 17, 2006 (edited) Considering the mi16 comes with motronic as standard in the 405 and bx its not exactly difficult, pretty much everyone who does the conversion on here uses motronic. Presumably hes talking about remappingthe standard ecu thou, so you will need the later 3-row mi16 loom and ecu and will need the knock sensor (unless he maps this out). If he says he can get 200bhp without remapping then enjoy the whine of the supercharger. Edited March 17, 2006 by d-
eob 7 Posted March 17, 2006 He thinks 200bhp is possible with a remap and some minor internal fettling but I don't really believe him. Incidentally, I have a lovely Eaton M45 just sitting on my shelf gathering dust so... I could always suggest... So, I should go shopping for a Motronic ECU & loom for an Mi16 then... d-9 0 Posted March 17, 2006 Yeah, standard 3-row mi16 ecu and loom should do the trick, as the earlier 2-row system isnt re-mapable (iirc). If he does get 200bhp with minor fettling and a remap then for f***s sake find out what he did!
eob 7 Posted March 17, 2006 Robbie is a bit mad. Shed in Rathnew full of ex-aviation milling machines. He got 232bhp verified out of a 2.0 VW, he reckons he can get at least 200bhp out of the Mi16 with very minor fettling. I'm a little scared. I have the loom that came with the engine outside but I suspect that it's 2-row, considering it's an alloy engine it nearly has to be, doesn't it? I presume this also means swapping or changing the '92 gearbox for one with mount for the flywheel sensor and maybe even the Mi16's flywheel?
petert 586 Posted March 18, 2006 Yeah, standard 3-row mi16 ecu and loom should do the trick, as the earlier 2-row system isnt re-mapable (iirc). You can rewrite either chip. I used to have a 2 row Powerchip in my Mi16x4, until I upgraded it to a 0 260 200 161 3 row.
dee205 3 Posted March 18, 2006 All the 1.9 Mi16's were alloy block. And they all run Motronic. Look at the ECU connection of the loom and you'll know if it's 2 or 3 row. Just count the rows! The only Mi16's running Jetronic are the ones in 205's still using the 205 managment and distributor. To get the Mi engine running on Motronic in a 205 is pretty much straight forward. Do a search and you'll find loads. I did it. I'd also like to see him get 200bhp on standard managment with little done to the engine. Not saying it's impossible but you've got guys on here running tb's, cams and fuly mappable managment bearly able to make that. Damien
eob 7 Posted March 18, 2006 Need to clarify a few things AFAIK, the loom is 2-row, no ECU, and a distributor. I'd like the flexibility of using coil packs. Would I be better off dumping my existing set-up and finding, say, a 106 XSi, swapping all the electrics over, and starting from scratch? The reason I'm asking is I still have that Eaton M45 just lying there... the opportunity to solder a new MAP sensor to the ECU and get the whole lot mapped for 300bhp would be great
d-9 0 Posted March 18, 2006 TBH I would proably spend the little bit more and buy a fully mapable system like an emerald or KMS! But you defo need to do the supercharger project, I was going to but sold mine last week due to needing to buy food
dee205 3 Posted March 18, 2006 I was going to but sold mine last week due to needing to buy food I know the feeling. Either the 205 or the 405 have to go. And it's not looking good for the 405!
