Painting Over Sikaflex

Recommended Posts

Sam

I've got some visable sikaflex on the rear arches that I need to paint over with black paint, does anyone know if hammerite will be ok, or will I need something specialist.

sikaflex is a polyurathane based sealant/adhesive.

Does it SAY you can paint over it? Usually that kind of stuff has to actually say it can be painted over, otherwise it reacts with the paint or something...

I got it from a friend who builds yachts so it has no label, I bought some (PU Based Sealant/Adhesive) before and I'm 99% sure you can paint over it once its cured.

Or if you have some left over then try it on something, let it cure over night and paint over it seeing if anything happens.

As a rule you can paint over any PU sealent once cured, but I've always had something against Hammers*ite :P

Sikaflex can be sanded and painted once cured, no problem, even 2-packs. True of most PU sealants.

Don't mind me, I'm just a paint-snob :P

Nothing wrong with it really, I just don't think it's as good as they claim.

Good enough for an old dog eared 205 student mobile?

I should think so

It's just their claims of being able to paint it over rust, and it lasting a million years that I have trouble with, lol.

I agree entirely, Hammerite has only ever dissapointed me. Epoxy primers are the closest thing to a miracle cure.
