Replace Conrod Or Not?

Recommended Posts

niklas

Well, should I replace it?

It may not be very clear on the picture (and it's damn hard making it any clearer) but it appears the engine has been quite close to spin a shell...

It's really not THAT much but maybe it's better to be safe than sorry? :)

those 2 tab bits youve circle red are there to lock with tabs on the bk of the bearings.

what are you trying to show is wrong as it looks fine to me. except maybe the scoring on the surface of the rod.

As I said it is not very clear on the picture. If you look very closely on the tab's and the line which splits the rod in two you'll see that they do continue on the other side, not at the same depth but still.

The one at the bottom is easier to see than the one at the top!

I've just had a look at a Mi16 conrod I have on my desk here, and it's exactly the same.

The "red" parts are in mine too.. so I guess it's just the way they are.

If you get another one it'll be the same.. :)

yup thats just where the tab in the bearing sits, presumably to stop it from spinning. i think it just continues onto the other half of the rod/cap to make it easier identifying which way round they fit.

Hrmm not entirely convinced about this, but well it should work anyway.

Otherwise I'll send the bill to you guys :P:D

It's NOT the same across all 4 rods, that's what caught my interrest!

Some are more, some are less.

Ok, I now see what you mean, took a closer look on the rod I have here, and it actually almost looks like it's started to spin a bearing in this one too. The location tabs don't look like they're machined, but seem like the bearing have been sliding slightly in them as there's scoring marks.

It certainly isn't like this on my Billet Crower rods at least

I can take a look at more Mi16 rods later. Have 10 more in the basement somewhere.

My mi conrods only had the cutout on one side of the split line, so I don't think they are supposed to continue round onto the other half.

One of my rods is like this, where the tabs have started to slide round removing material from the rod. I personally wont be using the bad rod, i dont fancy its chances seeing as these engines seem pretty prone to spinning shells anyway....

The chances of spinning a shell when in normal operation is pretty much zero I would guess.

It's only when things have gone bad, like oil surge, it can happen and then I doubt some minor scoring really makes the difference...

Because in my case it's really minor scoring, it's not even half a mm deep.

I'll use the rods, but maybe just for one season!
