Please Help..rattling Again!

well, after 150 miles of driving like my grandma's grandma on a sunday, its started knocking again!

been keeping the revs really low and not labouring the engine, until today i had to overtake a van, think the revs made about 4.5k max,almost instantly it started knocking again. i've heard that after a while it all may need tightening up again? is there any truth in this? i nearly cried like a baby, but instead resorted to hitting the steering wheel and chain smoking. any help much appreciated. ;)

I've just read one of your old threads about it knocking out one of the big ends.

Did you check the crank to see if it was bent?

Mi's usually bend them if the spin a shell.

crank was perfect as far as i know,luckily it hadn't spun one round. last time it happened, on inspection one set of shells had suffered 'fatigue failure'? all the rest were in pretty good condition.i got told by a 'reputable' engine firm that i would just need to replace the bearings.

on an even stranger note, i went and started it about 1/2 hour ago(couple hours after getting home from the very loud knocking) and it was as quite as a mouse with a barely audible rattle as the revs came down. i put this down to the oil having cooled and being thicker? still not sure bout this tightening up thing tho,its been mentioned to me by two people now.

Did your "reputable engine firm" actually check the crank for out of round? If they didn't then how they hell can they say that it only needs bearings.... :)

Agreed when ever you replace shells you should always check and if nessecary grind the crank.

 

We had an out of round crank delivered to us from the machine shop, luckily it was discovered before the engine was started.

 

(Needless to say I now use a different machine shop :) )

yeah,it was all declared to be ok! if something was seriously wrong such as it being out of round, would it not have rattled straight away, or gradually developed it? just kinda worried cos it was very sudden, one second no noise, then knocking,now a gentle rattle again when its semi cold. gonna get the sump off tommorow or over the weekend, have a look at the shells and retorque them all if they arent damaged.see what happens this time!

no, should it have been?it was new last year. pressure is really high, always has been. it was removed and cleaned tho,as bits of the 'brillo pad' from the filler cap had made there way in there. that was removed also when the engine was put back together. still not sure why it suddenly started doing it.

well... took it all apart again today, and it had spun a shell, so the crank is off for a regrind this week, gonna get the place to get me some new shells to match because the ones i got before are apparently not very good quality, my mate had similar trouble with shells from the same place on an 8v engine, and the company that are doing the work apparently don't rate the supplier of the shells much either! gonna ask them if its possible to take any more weight etc off the crank while they are at it. doubt it tho, its had alot of work done already.
