5150maxie 0 Posted March 16, 2006 any one got any pictures and tips on how to mount a 10" sub in the rear side panel rear passager side of which will equal the weight and all that, any ideas and that would be greatful
tidypug 5 2 Cars Posted March 16, 2006 I'm not too sure that you'd be able to make it all work right, the space is quite small behine the panel and may not be enough for the sub. I know a few people have put 6*9's there though
timmsy19 3 Posted March 16, 2006 should be possible if you can custom build a sub enclosure like a cone sort of thing that comes out from th side thats if u havent got any seats of course. that doesnt sound right i know if i had some pics it would explain it alot
5150maxie 0 Posted March 16, 2006 thanks lads that concluded that.many thanks
Paintguy 0 Posted March 16, 2006 It's something I'll be looking in to (eventually ). Something like a JL 10W3 only needs around 17litres (0.6 cuft) to work in, so it should be possible. In fact if you fitted two in an isobaric (clamshell) format, you'd halve the box size you needed, but would obviously have one speaker with it's ass hanging out into the cabin
tidypug 5 2 Cars Posted March 16, 2006 How much are those Jls now? i remember wanting one until i found out how much they were. I take it that you'd be taking the rear seats out?
Paintguy 0 Posted March 16, 2006 The W3's are dirt cheap, £150 at Car Audio Direct, but can be picked up brand new on the 'bay for even less. It's the big boy W7's that start to cost, £500 retail for a 10". I used to spend that sort of money on ICE, but can't really justify it any more. I'd only fit a sub in the rear ¼ if I could leave the interior looking relatively stock. I've had far too much gear stolen in the past (~£2k was my worst, single loss) to risk putting anything on show.
tidypug 5 2 Cars Posted March 16, 2006 Thats bad mate, i've been quite lucky with car brake ins. I didn't know they were that cheap. Think i'll have a lookl around
Paintguy 0 Posted March 16, 2006 Don't you dare bid on that pair on Ebay!
tidypug 5 2 Cars Posted March 16, 2006 i'd love to but seeing as i'm a student bum for another month i've not got any money for extravagancies. Just enough for beer and take aways

Paintguy 0 Posted March 16, 2006 It's the mounting depth that's worrying me atm. The 10's I have in mind need around 6", which might just be possible, but I reckon a decent 12 might be a bit too deep.
Edd-XS 0 Posted March 16, 2006 You would need to use a free to air sub really if you were to use that kind of space for a sub as it would be near on impossible to seal up properly. Something like the vibe square 6x9s might be an idea as when amped up they're pretty beefy! And tom im still yet to actually hear what my 6x9s sound like in those rear cards! It hasnt got a battery Edd
Paintguy 0 Posted March 17, 2006 An IB (free air) sub might be a good idea, but as you say, sealing it up would be a bit of a problem. I still need to have a good look at the available space, so this might just be pie in the sky, but I'm hoping I'll be able to make a small fiberglass enclosure and run the sub in Air Suspension mode I prefer the kind of sound this type of enclosure gives, they don't reach down quite as low as a ported box or an infinite baffle, but they cut out all the barry boy booming, and give excellent transients. Paintguy 0 Posted March 22, 2006 Had a bit of a measure up, and I think it's a non-starter. Dumbo here forgot that the seatbelt reel lives behind that trim, and the belt passes through it. There's be enough room for an install with an inverted cone (i.e. magnet out), but that's a definite no-no for me. An 8" might squeeze in at a push, but it wouldn't give enough bottom end to keep me happy.
tidypug 5 2 Cars Posted March 22, 2006 so you could fit some 6*9 s or 8" units in there with no problems?

I have seen those compact subs that fit in the spare wheel well on cars before
Paintguy 0 Posted March 22, 2006 so you could fit some 6*9 s or 8" units in there with no problems? Size-wise yes. You'd still need to fabricate some kid of flat panel to mount them too though, as Edd-XS has done. Henry: What, and have the box on show to all the chavs that only ever see the back end of my car? btw, took lil' Thomas out for his first run in the Pug last weekend. I don't know who was more excited, me or him! He still managed to fall asleep though
aeinstein 0 Posted March 23, 2006 just my 2p'orth. i bought my gti from a chap who liked ICE. i knocked him down a good bit on the price cos he'd reclaimed all the audio and left bare wires hanging out the dash, 8 inch speaker holes on the shelf and 6x9 holes in the front doors. in my experience, moral of the tale... if you ever intend selling it, (and you never know!) make sure you can put it back to standard, or at least not have gaping holes. al
Paintguy 0 Posted March 23, 2006 I agree with you entirely al. I've done plenty of hefty ICE installs, but I've always do it in such a way that the interior could bee put back to stock easily. When fabricating door or kickwell builds, I always source replacement panels before I mod the originals, and I've never ever ever cut speaker holes in a parcel shelf of a hatchback!! I had an Orion with two 6" rear fills and a Rockford Power 10 built in to the rear shelf, but it was covered over by an exact replica of the factory trim, so it couldn't be seen from the top. But underneath the shelf (in the boot) it was a different story, with 3 correct volume boxes. It also had door builds for a pair of 6" JL Audio drivers each side, and mids and tweets built in to angled fiberglass kickwell builds. 'Twas one of the best systems I've ever built, pity it probably got sold off down some dodgy pub for peanuts
