Bonnet Hinge

Recommended Posts

ajones12

Whilst trying to remove the drivers side bonnet hinge I sheared a bolt holding the hinge to the inner wing.

What is behind the bolt if anything and what's the best way of getting the sheared bolt out??

Thanks in advance.

Is there enough of the bolt visible for you to be able to weld a nut to it to turn it out?

Either that or it is possible to buy drill bits that work similar to a uj, that is you can hold the drill at a different angle to the drill bit. This will give you the room to drill the bugger out

Unfortunately its sheared off flush with the inner wing :-(

I will try drilling it out, not too sure what (if anything) is behind it though??

i had this happen to me too. As a bit of a bodge i removed the plastic scuttle trim and got a bendy drill extenstion in and drilled a small hole through the old bolt and just used a self tapping screw to hold the hinge. Its a bit loose but its worked for over 3 years now.

Best picture I could find of the back of that area:

Looks like it goes straight into the box section, so no way of attacking it from behind :)

this has happened on mine too-so i decided to do away with the hindge as with the back hige missing it made the bonnet rub just under the front windsreen when opening. instead in have used 4 sparco bonnet pins (rally style) only thing is having to remove your entire bonnet now!but hey! it looks cool and does the job better.

its a captive nut, so a case of lumping it really, unless you have some way of drilling at 90 degrees acurately, or maybe taking off outer wing and using a small hole saw to takle the box section, but not advisable

^ And a bit extreme :)

I managed to furk one of the captive nuts that hold on the wings (just above that box section we're talking about). I drilled it out and welded a nut in its place.

Not sure if there's room to do something similar with the bonnet hinge one though.

Sam

This happened on mine, a friends dad managed to get in there with a 90 degree drill and then filled with weld and retapped it, its been like it for a good 3 years now.

4 bonnet pins anyone?

When mine did this I cut the head off a shouldered bolt & welded it in place as a stud.

I'm thinking of looking for a suitable stud to do this before they shear off on the other bolts too.

Graham.

Sorry to bring this one back up, but is it safe to drive with a broken hinge, as long as you've still got the other one and the front slam panel latch?
