The top one's a vent isn't it? Mine's got a little cap over it.

the bit on the top pic is for the reverse pull cable for the be1 gearbox system

or use it when needing to add gearbox oil into the gearbox.

bottom pic is for switch for the reversing lights

Cheers!

It's a 1.6 gearbox with reverse below 5th though, so are you sure it's relevant to a BE1?

Anyone know if it's a big job connecting up the reversing lights switch and if it's an MOT requirement to have a reverse light?

Surely it's just a case of plugging in the old connector?

It's not an MOT test requirement. I didn't have one for ages.

Think it has to work for the MOT if the light is fitted.

Not hard to wire it up - junior power timer connector to fit onto the plug you have there, and the wires terminate under the dash in one of the multiplugs.

Have a look around under your filter, the plug may be about down there

Sure that one by the blue cable is a vent.

Also sure it's supposed to have a little dust cap in it that lets stuff out but stops things falling in like Stu says.

Oh ok, best put a cover cap onto it then. I'll have a look tomorrow when there's some light to see if the plug is nearby. The problem is though that it's an S16 engine so surely there'll be different connections?

top pic is where lift reverse goes on BE1 boxes and its just a blanking pastic screw in grommet on BE3.

bottom pic is reverse light connection.

I can't help but notice in your pics your engine has a GTi-6 head not an s16

GTi-6 head...oh, news to me lol, I just drive it and let the professionals maintain it! Is that a good thing then?

it is until your tensioners go ;)

gti6 engines are notorious for cambelts snapping and tensioners giving way which means lots of bent valves :(

get cambelt changed every 30k at very most

Oh ok, well should be alright for another 20K since it's only done a bit over 9K since rebuild etc. Are they a tough job to do cambelt and tensioners on....i.e. price wise?

about £140 for cambelt tensioner kit and water pump (my gti-6 is on its third water pump - very weak pants design), easy peasy job to change belt and pulleys

everyone has got them pics corect,

That top pic is well handy and should be kept on here somewhere as that place is ideal for filling your gear box up with a funel.

2 litres in there and your away!

Cheers for that guys, doesn't sound too bad a price considering how much it can cost if all goes wrong!

The pics are all from my photobucket which is always in my signature anyway.

A few years back, I had an old nissan micra, and the reversing switch was knackered on it. Come MOT time I asked the tester and its not even looked at. Whether fitted or not, reversing lights dont need to work.
