GLPoomobile 958 Posted March 15, 2006 Firstly, if this topic sounds a bit chavvy, it's not meant to Basically I'm just after some thoughts about differnt filters as I don't have much experience with them. Had a K&N on my first 1.6 which sounded quite sucky sucky under throttle, and had an unknown one on my 1.9 (possibly basic Pipercross one) which you couldn't really hear. At the moment I have the factory set up on my 1.6 and on the one hand I'm tempted to clean it all up, respray the airbox to look new, and whack a decent element in it. But I find it's a total pain in the bum cos the trunking gets in the way for a lot of jobs, and I hate to think about how much heat the black, metal airbox is absorbing whilst mounted above the manifold! I already have the adaptors to go down the induction route with a filter behind the headlight, so just need a new filter. Ideally I'd like to keep it fairly cheap and was looking at Simota filters for about £30 on Funky Products yesterday, but I'm wondering if there is really that much difference between a cheap filter and an expensive one from K&N etc. It's only a 1.6, and I'm not interested in maximising every last bhp, but at the same time I don't want to put something on that is going to give poor filtration or be really restrictive for the sake of saving £30 or whatever. On the other hand, whilst cost is one thing, there is the induction sound to consider. Again, I know it sounds chav bringing this up, but at the end of the day we all like a bit of induction noise don't we? I remember ages ago someobedy had commented on a video by a member on here from Greece (IIRC) who had an ITG foam filter, and they said it was the best induction noise they had heard on an 8v with just a filter. Is there quite a noticeable difference in sound between different filters?
Jonmurgie 2 Posted March 15, 2006 The standard airbox configuration on the 205 isn't that bat really, the sealed air box has a direct cold air ram pipe (ok, gets in the way a bit but it's oly 2 clips to remove it!) and if you look at some of the newer aftermarket filters coming out now they kind of emulate the standard 205 setup (BMC andnthe Pipercorss Vipers spring to mind!). I don't think it's chav, however, to want a nice bit of induction noise, and fitting a cone filter (in the right place) is a way to get that. What is totally rubbish though, is people who simply remove the standard air box and fit a cone filter over the manifold... totally stupid really as it won't get any cold air and just suck in hot air off the manifold! Best bet is to re-locate the filter to behind the passenger headlight, I believe the K&N 57i kit does that. I had an ITG foam filter on my 8v 1.9 and following the instructions from Peugeot Sport I fabricated the pipework and it all fitted rather well (though I removed the washer bottle). Here are some pics: It sounded great and had plenty of cold air from around the front of the car, and was well out of the way from anything hot. I've not had any other filter on the 205 so can't compare it to other ones but to be fair I'd have thought they all sound about the same. As for which make to get, I'd go for one of the main ones to be fair... K&N, ITG, Pipercross etc. over the new 'cheap' brands. Hope that helps a little!! GLPoomobile 958 Posted March 15, 2006 can i ask what this funky products is??... A website full of aftermarket parts. Mostly for Jap stuff. Just went on there yesterday cos someone had posted the address up recently as a place to get a particular aftermarket air horn.
DrSeuss 0 Posted March 15, 2006 I think alot of the gains from more expensive filtration elements come from the filtration capabilities.
RobMGti 0 Posted March 15, 2006 I had a K&N 57i kit on mine modified my Andy @ Hiflow to connect to a RAM air style pipe. It sounded slightly mental for just an induction kit and certainly wasnt absorbing any heat from inside the engine bay. Rob
jonD6B 0 Posted March 15, 2006 I've got a K+N on my 1.9 but if it wasn't already fitted when I bought the car I would have certainly fitted a RamAir filter as it is basically a light foam and polymer construction and has a large intake area and no density to baffle the induction noise. I had one on a 19 16V and it sounded mint.
pug_ham 245 3 Cars Posted March 16, 2006 I'm wondering if there is really that much difference between a cheap filter and an expensive one from K&N etc. Is there quite a noticeable difference in sound between different filters? Yes & Yes. I had a JR filter on my 1.6 originally & that sounded good on a standard exhaust & a homemade induction kit. I did the same to my mums 309 SRi with a pipercross air filter & like you say, it was almot silent by comparison. The cheap air filters filtration properties can vary dramatically from a decent branded one, I don't think I'm alone in having heard bad reults from the cone filters by BMC which are a fairly cheap make. Go for a Green filter if any, you should be able to get one for under £30 afaik, you need one with a 70mm neck to fit the AFM tophat. Graham.
RHULPUG 0 Posted March 16, 2006 If you're after some engine raw then get some throttle bodies on your engine! They certainly give more than a nice raw when planting the throttle!

Edd-XS 0 Posted March 18, 2006 just to add I 'think' I might have an old 57i GTi kit at work (halfords). The most useful part of it i can see is the shorter induction tubing with all the necessaries on it! Would this be useful for an Mi conversion? If not I can pick it up for someone on here if they want it! Edd
adam_young 0 Posted March 18, 2006 I'd save your money mate. The only "gain" would be some extra noise. I've been forced in to using a K&N kit due to the Mi conversion, but long term I'd like to sort out some kind of closed induction kit thats taking in cool air from ourside. The garage thats working on my car at the moment reckons I should put the battery in the boot and maybe relocate the washer bottle. Then rig up a closed induction kit using something like a BMC airbox. They are pricey though and its a fair amount of work. I've been looking around for a new filter for mine as the my K&N got mashed (someone forgot to tighten the battery clamp! ), but I cant get bugger all to fit behind the headlight. Jon do you have anymore pictures of where your washer bottle went please?

If you mean the rubber hose withthe spigot for the SAD & breather hose, no. Its the wrong shape & size for the Mi throttle body. Graham.
Edd-XS 0 Posted March 18, 2006 ok cheers for that graham. In that case weve got a KnN at work going for a 205 GTi for £39.99! the KnN looks tiny tho?! Edd
