Timing Problem- Damage Diagnosis

Recommended Posts

Powers

Over the weekend I decided to fire up the Mi16 after I had let it stand for 2 months. After a while trying to get it to start it fired up and ran very badly - Reving at 500-750 rev/min and sounded like a tractor! So I increased the throttle thinking that it was just a blockage but it wouldnt rev past 1250 rev/min and it started to backfire, I immediately thought it was something serious so stopped it running.

The first thing I checked was the timing, due to the symptoms.

To my amazement, I lined the crank pulley and the inlet cam perfectly but the exhaust cam is around 2 - 3 teeth out, - behind where it should be (retarded).

So my questions are:

How is this possible? As I have never experienced this before.

Most importantly what damage could have been done? I dont have a compression tester but I will order one tomorrow and check when I am next back home.

Cheers lads.

2-3 teeth out and I'd have thought your valves would be bouncing off your pistons!! You sure you've checked the timing right?

Poor idle, poor reving and misfires sound like ignition issues, like a plug is fouled (especially if it took a while to crank) or the leads have broken down...

Timing is def out. All ignition parts apart from the amplifier are brand new.

2 teeth out you probably will have got away with - correct it and fire up the old girl and see what happens :)

As for why - under tensioned belt meaning it could jump teeth is the obvious one. Does the belt feel slack, and do both tensioners still feel OK and done up tightly?

Belt is pretty slack, so its a good warning for everyone to check theirs! I will call Matt at QEP and order a belt and tensioners. Cheers mate.

My explaination would be that the tensioners were not tightend fully. Over the 2 months the tension of the belt acting on the tensioners slackened them off.

Apparently starting an engine puts the greatest load on the cambelt (a lot of friction to overcome), so the belt ended up skipping due to lack of tension?

Always worth while turning an engine that has been sat for a while by hand first.

Cambelt,. tensioners and water pump ordered for a pretty good price. So will hopefully get it sorted on the weekend.
