2.0 Turbo On Twin Carbs

hi ive got a xm turbo lump in my garege with the loom and ecu, but its basically a bare block got f***ed over on ebay so i need loads of parts like sensors an air flow meter, boost pipes etc. so i was wondering can you get a mainfold for carbs and wot sort of works nvolved as it would ditch the injection and solve most of my probs. cheers matt

I have seen carbs used on turbo'd cars but think i am right in saying that some things need changing as carbs usually work under vacuum conditions (for the ventury effect), but a turbo is running under pressure.

 

Needs to have the turbo pumping the air into an air box also for distribution through the carbs obviously.

 

Sorry for the vague post but there must be stuff out in the google world on this type of conversion.

 

Good luck cos it sounds like a great project to me.

Apparently DCOE carbs were originally designed for forced induction, so require only a few small changes to the setup.

 

I know you need a variable rate fuel-regulator which will keep the fuel pressure a certain psi above boost pressure.

There's a dude called Paul, who i think is on here now and again, who has a carbed, turbo'ed mi16, in his 205. Was converte by Norris Motorsport. Have a look on the Norris Motorsport website. Google will find you this...

I think you would be better off with some form of aftermarket ECU, megasquirts aren't too much money and you can do most of the mapping your self.

 

The other reason common options are Emerald, KMS and Omex. KMS can controll the boost as well (unsure of the others).

A decent rolling road weber specialist could get it working if you built it and pottered their with no boost but you'd still need electronic boost controller for best results and get an EGT gauge just in case one of floats sticks!

Personally I'd go the EFI route. Money you save on RR'd could get you a wideband controller. I am an Emerald and now KMS dealer so can provide answers to any questions you may have about these.

thanks for all the replys, id guesses i need an airbox for the turbo to run to, sorry i didnt explain properly i have the ecu an wirining, but im missing all the ancilleries, all the metal and plastic turbo pipes, all the coolant pipes, vaccuum pipes, airflow meter etc etc. im in no need or rush to do anything with the engine an as it is its worthless to me so its an ideal project to do, so any more info would be great, thanks again, matt

Just get some samco hoses (or something simlar) - you would have to get these anyway.

 

Coolant pipes - well you would need these even if you went carbs... Maybe some on your 8v would fit?

 

Vaccuum pipes shouldnt be too hard either.

 

Airflow meter - Doesn't the turbo engine use a MAP sensor instead?

 

 

It doesnt sound that bad....

I have an inlet manifold and throttle body for one of these engines if it is any use? Drop me a PM or email chairman@psooc.com if it is.

 

They do have a MAP sensor which is why your ECU has a pipe that runs to it, so no AFM
