EnglishRob 0 Posted March 13, 2006 HI folks, I'm wondering if anyone knows how thick the main earth wire from the negative on the car battery to the car body should be? It appears I have an earthing problem with my new 205 which at the moment was fixed with a couple of thin bits of wire off an old spot light. I'm assuming this isn't ideal, so I was just wondering if anyone could suggest any suitable replacement wire? Rob
pug_ham 245 3 Cars Posted March 14, 2006 At least 6mm imo, preferably thicker than the wire in those rubbish cheap jump leads & better quality wire too. Graham.

Thanks, I'm a bit paranoid at the moment about it. I have this horrible feeling that the wires it has on at the moment aren't thick enough and would quite possibly over heat melt. I'll try Halfords later, okay they might be over priced, but I can always look Rob
stevec205gti 0 Posted March 14, 2006 It shouldn't be a case of how thick is it - more what current is it rated up to (though it is normally the case that the thicker the wire the more it'll handle). This is written on most new reels of wire.

I did have a picture of the temporary fix that was done before we added the earth wire, but it I haven't got it handy. What I'm trying to acheve is add another clean earth from the battery to the body of the car because without this earth, the indicators don't work at all, the head unit (when it was fitted) reset itself when the lights were turned on, and a whole load of other things didn't work. I'm going to pop over to Halfords in a bit to see what they have. Would the earth from an amp wiring kit be any good? Rob
boombang 2 Posted March 14, 2006 A metre of 4 guage and a couple of good quality threaded screw type connectors should only cost a tenner at the very most and will do the job.
EnglishRob 0 Posted March 14, 2006 I had a look in Halfords earlier. They do a 3 metre earth cable for a 300W amp at £6.99. I think I'll have a look at some other car spares places for the cable & connectors. At least I know what I need now anyways. Rob
