munky205 0 Posted March 13, 2006 Hi guys, story goes a little something like this. Over the past week i had been getting some major clutch judder when pulling away in first and was getting slightly worried. Then i went to work on saturday morning to pick up some board for a boot install and crammed it in some how(six foot by three foot!!)put it into reverse and moved back a couple of metres, felt like i hadn't put it into gear properly and had jumped back out with that horrible grinding noise. Put it into first to pull away, revs up,clutch up................nothing!! The engine was still ticking over but when i lifted the clutch up it didn't even try to move and impolitely let out another long rattle when the clutch was up but silent when down. Nothing leaked from the underneath of the car and im a bit stuck as to what it could be,gearbox?clutch? Only had the car about a month and im a bit upset Thanks in advance Steve
d-9 0 Posted March 13, 2006 Sounds like the clutch has died. Pain in the arse job as you have to take the box off, but not too hard.
Jonmurgie 2 Posted March 13, 2006 Yeah, first port of call is to pull the gearbox off and check the clutch. Fortunately, you will find some guides to removing the gearbox and replacing a clutch here: http://www.mdracing.co.uk/howto.asp
munky205 0 Posted March 13, 2006 If it is the clutch then i've got a spare one lying about which should save me some money, guess i'll have to get that box off and have a look, scared as to what i might find in there cheers guys. Thinking about it,if you have an mi16 engine but a 1.6 gearbox then which clutch do you use? Always something that has confused me.

An Mi16 engine should have an Mi16 clutch, the gearbox is irrelevant, its the flywheel you bolt the clutch to.
munky205 0 Posted March 13, 2006 Well that makes more sense ,cheers.
Martin@PRD 0 Posted March 14, 2006 Im sorry to hear about your car all ready, though I did contact Derek about the selector fork being excessively worn when I replaced the gear linkages but he reinsured me that the gearbox was rebuilt and also had an up rated clutch fitted, If your going to pull the box off, be sure to have another around handy, if it turns out to be bolloxed get hold of Alex and find out who did the rebuild and get them to fix it. Time for a 1.9 box do you think? Regards Martin
nick 3 Posted March 14, 2006 Check to make sure that the gearbox hasn't come loose from the engine. Mine had the exact same syptoms as yours and it was a couple of bolts that join the g/box and engine at the bottom had come loose, the engine and box were literally sagging in the middle making the clutch run out of true (hence the vibes). I only found out when it ripped the centre out of the clutch and left me with no drive! Nick
