mbayley77 0 Posted March 12, 2006 I am looking at prices for various engines at the moment. As my other post on here tells you my MI engine is currently sick so if it turns out its had its day i am wandering what to replace it with. The car is for rallying so dont want to go the turbo route or anything greater than 2000cc. Also dont want to be spending lots of money which i dont have on things like ecu's and the like. I have carbs already so am willing to stay on this route to save wiring problems etc etc. Have found some things on 306 gti engines or the 206 engine but nothing conclusive from the threads on the search. Whats peoples thoughts on different engines and the power capabilities of them. Cheers
boldy205 75 Posted March 12, 2006 i am also looking into this for my 1.9 as the good old jettronic is as rough as a badgers ass and theres some rather worrying tappy noises on start up!(and the more i rant it the faster it seems to go the next day, a good thing i hope?!) im thinking 306GTI6 on carbs as the MIs are possabaly getting quite old and tired by now? its more the question of where to get 1!! will be following the post with interest. matt. veloce200 3 Posted March 15, 2006 AFAIK rally regs will be same as most sprint or race which means you could only use an alloy block. The letter of the regs needs to be check though. The block needs to be of the same type and material as one used in the cars production life. Most will enable an alloy block mi16 to be used as to all intents and purposes it is fundementally the same as 8v block. Its better anyway as its lighter but of course the main reason for this rule is to stop someone putting eg MI16 engine in a
boombang 2 Posted March 15, 2006 Most rally regs purely done on capaciyy with your capacity rated at 1.7 times if turbocharged. The thing I thought of was using a 1600 Tu 16valve, mate up to the BE box and you'll have a nice competitive 1600 class car. Otherwise if you want to stay standard either Gti-6 or a dry sumped 180 engine (necessary as sump sits so low) are pretty much your only choices on decent power/torque without spending big money. Consider though that for the cost of the 180 engine with dry sump, you could probably have a 180bhp Gti-6 lump anyhow.
boldy205 75 Posted March 16, 2006 so what might be the going rate for a GTI6 enginge then, any rough ideas? also i cant seem to find a ready supply local (bristol area)
RobMGti 0 Posted March 16, 2006 Id just look on gti6.com though they are beginning to wise up that alot of people on here are after their engines haha Going rate for an engine, id say £500 or so depending on condition, they tend to make alot more than an Mi due to not need a rebuild
rich_w 0 Posted March 16, 2006 I have heard hiflow is selling 106 gti engines with Maxi heads for around £1k !?!?! If you fancy the 1600 class he maybe worth a ring.
PUGugly 0 Posted March 28, 2006 The 306 gti6 engine sounds good. Will it go in easy or is there loads of work to do? I assume there would be no problem with losing a lot of the electrics and using bike carbs and a mappable ignition setup??? These are all alloy head and block arn't they? Or did they vary like the mi engine over the years??
