adam_young 0 Posted March 11, 2006 It looks like my alternator has packed in. Looking at it I recon I need to undo the bolts from above (it will be tight as very little room to work with) and then drop it out underneath. I dont have any ramps so this would seem like the best method. A mate recons that we could open the alternator up and look for broken solder joints etc. Is it worth it or should I just get a recon unit? Also is the Mi alternator the same as the 8v (or any other models)? GSF list it as a slightly different part number so probably not. They list it as the same as the 1.8 TD. Cheers. pug309twin40s 1 Posted March 12, 2006 the mi16 is 80amp alternator compared to the 50-70amp of the 8v alternators. but any alternator of an xu engine will fit. easy to remove. slacken and remove the bolts then pull the altenator to the left side and disconnect the wiring from it. depending how much space you have sometimes the alternator can be pulled out the top or drop it out the bottom. ellisg 0 Posted March 12, 2006 depending how much space you have sometimes the alternator can be pulled out the top or drop it out the bottom. I love that word, sometimes! Its a pig to get out of the gap Do a search for a number of options, I had to undo engine mount and jack the engine up to get it out, others have removed from below by moving radiator/pipes
adam_young 0 Posted March 12, 2006 Is it much odds what Amp I get? My local parts place asked me if I wanted 50 or 70 amp? Its £70 for a recon one so will probably just do that rather than risk another 2nd hand one. It doesn't look like I have much space to work with, but I'm hoping that it will drop out underneath. littlemike 0 Posted March 12, 2006 8valve alternators use a 4rib drive belt whereas mi alternators use 5rib belts. So if you want to use an alternator off an 8valve you will have to use an 8valve belt too. A 50amp will be fine on a 205. When I changed mine I had to remove the radiator as the bloody thing wouldn't fit through the gap!
Simes 248 2 Cars Posted March 12, 2006 8v one is slightly shorter giving you a little more clearance.
duncs 0 Posted March 12, 2006 i had to do this twice last month on my mi easiest way i found was jaking the engine up of its top mount and getting the alternator through the gap saves having to remove pipes etc by going down the bottom
